The Rock made a shocking return to WWE recently and expressed interest in facing Roman Reigns next year. However, WWE’s main focus appears to be on setting up Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns for the upcoming Showcase of The Immortals.

Last week on SmackDown, the two superstars had a cold staredown, teasing the second chapter of their unfinished rivalry. However, that doesn’t mean the chances of The Rock vs. Reigns are completely nixed. The latter match could be a non-title rivalry in the future.

Cody Rhodes is still the top contender to dethrone Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40

Roman Reigns is currently feuding with the rising star of SmackDown, LA Knight. Considering his astronomical rise in WWE, several fans view The Megastar as another potential candidate to face Reigns at WrestleMania. Despite the string of fresh opponents on the face of Roman, one shouldn’t rule out the odds of Cody Rhodes finishing his story next year in Philadelphia.

The aforementioned report via Sports Illustrated implied that the current favorite to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia is still Cody Rhodes. The two battled with each other in a high-voltage main event match earlier this year. However, The American Nightmare came up short against The Tribal Chief.

While the former continues his insurmountable reign, Cody Rhodes has also taken his stock to another level. The latter is the biggest babyface WWE has seen in years. Not only does Rhodes boast an unfathomable fanbase, but he has proven his mettle as a needle mover. The star has consistently clocked up tremendous merchandise sales, attracts enormous positive publicity and handles live tours on a weekly basis.
