2022 was probably one of the best years in Sheamus’ WWE career. He didn’t started off the year on top, however, until it came to a close, the Celtic Warrior found himself above all. One of the most intriguing stories which created an ever-lasting impact on fans was the Intercontinental Championship saga between Sheamus and Gunther.

At Clash at the Castle back in September, the two warriors tore the house down. This was a pretty anticipated clash between two of the most brutal striking specimens in this business. It truly lived up to the expectations and they went onto deliver a memorable match that will be remembered for ages to come.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter rated 5 stars to this battle. This marked the second WWE match of 2022 to receive such a rating, after Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes’ Hell in a Cell match. Despite giving his all, Sheamus fell short of living his dream. After the match ended, the vocal crowd at the Principality Stadium came to their feats and appreciated the unreal effort put on display by the Irishman.

As we’ve entered into 2023, there’s still one goal for Sheamus to aim at. Indeed, it’s the Intercontinental Title. Recently on Twitter, the Celtic Warrior posted a resolution to capture the Working Man’s strap at Wrestlemania 39. Despite of the empty-handed outcomes against The Ring General previously, the former seems unglued and dedicated to win the prestigious gold.

Before Gunther debuted on SmackDown post-Wrestlemania, the previous regime has made the mockery of the Intercontinental Championship. It wasn’t even defended in months, which was considered as a huge let-down from the WWE Universe.

However, the unimaginable happened and new people came into authority. Once Triple H came into the act as creative lead, he ensured to divert his focus towards revitalizing the status of both mid-card titles. Thankfully, the Ring General was just getting started as the IC Champion and the reign really took off since then.

Following that, Gunther reassembled The Imperium and they remain as a dominant force on Friday nights till date. So far, The Ring General has put down several men like Ricochet, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, Shinsuke Nakamura and more. In two weeks time, he’s set to defend the Working man’s title against Braun Strowman, which quite possibly is the biggest threat to his impeccable reign so far.
