The year has been a big roller coaster ride for Cody Rhodes in regards to his wrestling career. When Rhodes returned to WWE, he was in top form and remained undefeated in the company. Rhodes’ comeback was one of the greatest moments of this year in the WWE, and he even bagged the ESPY WWE Moment of the Year award for his return to the company.

Cody Rhodes’ return may not be as mind-boggling as Bray Wyatt’s comeback to the WWE, but “The American Nightmare” got the pop from the crowd he deserves. Cody Rhodes’ first feud after his return was against Seth Rollins, whom he has defeated three times since his return. Rhodes’ high point of his career came when he fought with a torn pectoral muscle against Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell.

Dave Meltzer gave the match five stars, the highest rating for a WWE main roster match since 2011. Both wrestlers, especially Rhodes, were lauded for their performances at the event. Cody Rhodes was lauded for his courage and his ability to fight at the event by many wrestling pundits and the WWE Universe. He went under the knife after a few days, and his recovery time was said to be 8–9 months.

WWE had many plans for The American Nightmare, including his presence at the Clash at the Castle PLE. However, an injury derailed all the plans, but now, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cody Rhodes is back to his regular routine of working out and lifting weights.

“Rhodes’ recovery is going well. He’s back to normal when it comes to his ability to train and lift. No word when he’ll return given it makes sense for it to be a surprise.”

The WarGames match concept is something that has its roots in the NXT brand. The brain behind the concept is known to be Dusty Rhodes, who served as a writer and creative director of NXT in its early years. Rhodes was also a mentor to many young talents, like Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, and Kevin Owens. At the Survivor Series WarGames, Kevin Owens paid tribute to Dusty by sporting his iconic red elbow pad and t-shirt with Dusty’s picture on it.

During a recent interview on Corey Graves’ After The Bell Podcast, KO discussed the homage. Prior to the bout, he claimed to have spoken with Cody Rhodes to confirm that he was fine with it. Owens felt that he tries to give Rhodes a nod whenever it is possible for him.

“To be part of the first one on the main roster, I took the opportunity to wear Dusty’s shirt and the red elbow pad as a tribute to him. I talked to Cody beforehand, made sure he was cool with it, and everything. It’s just always neat to be able to tie back to history and give Dusty a little nod. I try to do that as much as I can.”

With the news that Cody Rhodes is recovering soon, we might expect him to surprise us at the Royal Rumble. The American Nightmare will definitely chase the WWE Championship after his return, a title that no one from his family has won in their careers. Will Cody be the first? Only time will tell.
