At this point, it’s safe to assume that WWE is running out of challengers for Gunther. He has been on an unprecedented Intercontinental Championship reign spanning over 500 days. Many superstars stepped up in an attempt to dethrone The Ring General, only to fail before the champion. In a pursuit to upstage the Austrian, a quartet of superstars is going to vie next week.
As announced by WWE during this week’s Raw, The Miz, Bronson Reed, Ivar, and Ricochet will battle in a high-stakes, Fatal 4-way match next Monday. It’s going to determine Gunther’s upcoming title defense. Last night on the Halloween edition of Raw, Gunther was a guest on The Miz TV. The Ring General and his Imperium boys lashed out at the A-Lister. However, The Miz fought back with some verbal jabs.
In the end, it was not enough to save the day for Miz. Imperium, which completely demolished Maryse’s husband, was later interrupted by DIY. The charged-up duo of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa defeated Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci in their first match together in over three years. After his embarassment on his talk show, Miz approached Adam Pearce.
The A-Lister demanded a shot at Gunther’s IC title, but the Raw GM was adamant about not simply handing Miz the opportunity. Similarly, other superstars kept their points, which eventually led to the proclamation of a Fatal Four-Way showdown for next week. By the looks, WWE is trying to turn Miz babyface, and he might be next in line to get Gunther’s feet off guard.
Gunther to face a different challenge from The Miz?
Despite being in the run of his career, Gunther hasn’t been on WWE’s last three PLEs. If the trend continues, it would be a matter of grave concern. He’s been the most dominant of the lot and needs to have a prominent spot at premium live events moving forward.
At the moment, it looks like WWE may have figured out a way to book The Ring General for November 25th in Chicago. With Miz owning Gunther on the mic this week, WWE could plant the seeds to settle the debate between two of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time. The A-Lister would bring a different challenge to the table for Gunther as far as the promos are concerned.
That being said, he could have a major role in this year’s Survivor Series emanating from Chicago’s Allstate Arena. At the moment, it’s unlikely that WWE will go for Champion vs. Champion matches this year. If Gunther’s not considered for the rumored WarGames match, he simply might have a title defense.
