WWE Looks to EXPAND its Roots in Africa as it Starts its Search for “The Next African Superstar”

WWE prides itself in being a workplace where people from ethnicities and cultures work together. WWE recruits its superstars from all walks of life and nationalities. This has helped them become the global phenomena they are today. And now, after growing its roots in Europe, WWE has made overtures toward Africa. To be specific, Nigeria!

The company announced its latest tryouts to be held in Africa with an official announcement, titled “The Search for Africa’s Next WWE Superstar.“

The WWE Africa Tryouts will take place on 23rd February, 2023, in Lagos, Nigeria. The tryouts are being held in partnership with SuperSport, WWE’s official broadcast partner on the continent.

WWE has asked interested candidates to submit their videos for consideration till December 18, 2022. James Kimball, WWE’s Head of Talent Operations and Strategy, stated Africa will be the company’s next focal point of its multi-country recruitment strategy. Kimball also noted that the region has immense potential and WWE would be closely working with their partner, SuperSport, to identify the next generation of top-notch African superstars.

WWE has divided the selection process into 3 stages. First, the candidates would need to submit their videos for consideration till December 18, 2022, as noted above. Following which, the shortlisted candidates would be called in for multi-day tryouts in Lagos, Nigeria, in February, 2023.

Candidates that pass the second round of tryouts in Lagos will then fly to Las Vegas for a third round before finally getting a developmental contract from the company.

Omos and Apollo Crews have Already reached Lagos for the WWE Tryouts

WWE’s Nigerian Superstars, Omos and Apollo Crews flew to Nigeria following Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While Apollo provided more information on the African tryouts, a heartwarming video of Omos got viral on social media. The 7’4” giant was seen embracing his family as he returned home after years!

WWE has organized tryouts at different locations worldwide in search of the next big thing. China, Saudi Arabia and India are some of the many countries where the company has held tryouts in the past.

WWE does have African representation on its programming. Apollo Crews and Omos hail from Nigeria. Kofi Kingston has roots in Ghana, but there has never been an African WWE Superstar born and raised by the ‘Mother of Mankind.‘
