Brock Lesnar is not regarded as the Beast Incarnate for nothing. From John Cena to The Undertaker, many WWE legends have become victims of the carnage of Lesnar in his 20+-year wrestling career. Speaking of which, former one-legged WWE Superstar Zach Gowens recounts the time when WWE made him blade himself in singles action against Brock Lesnar.
During an interview with Chris Van Vliet, the 40-year-old wrestler reflected on his singles match against Brock Lesnar in 2003. Speaking of the match, Gowens disclosed that WWE made him pull off a blade job while he was only 19 years old. Not only was the superstar young, but he was also inexperienced in wrestling at that time. He hadn’t been wrestling for more than six months before joining WWE, per Gowens.
The 40-year-old stated that his mother was well aware that Lesnar was to deliver a merciless beating to her son. Nonetheless, she was unaware of the apparent blood spot. As Lesnar approached for a chair shot, Gowens was to slash a blade across his forehead. The said spot was planned to increase Brock Lesnar’s heel heat among WWE fans.
So, the chair shot happens, and I pulled a gig out and I poke and twist and nothing happens. And I feel Brock Lesnar walking over to me to pick me up and here comes the shot that we need. I'm like f**k it! I just dig it in my head, and I went --Zach Gowens in the interview with Chris Van Vliet
His mother was furious after the blood spot took place, per Zach Gowens. He also added that it was the first time he had ever bladed in a wrestling show. In addition, Gowens stated that the scar of his blade incision is still visible on his forehead after nearly two decades.
However, these graphic moments on WWE shows are a thing of the past now. WWE has immensely toned down the brutality in wrestling these days, as direct chair shots to the head, bleeding, and other various gruesome stunts are not there anymore.
Zach Gowens discusses his backstage segment with Brock Lesnar
Zach Gowens is the only athlete with only one leg to wrestle for WWE to date. The 40-year-old signed with WWE at the young age of 19 in 2003. In his brief time with the company, Gowens was in a couple of disturbing yet unforgettable segments. One such moment was when Brock Lesnar tossed the former WWE superstar down a staircase.
While speaking in an interview with Steve Fall of Wrestling News Co, the interviewer brought up the infamous wheelchair segment of Lesnar and Gowens. In the said segment, the former pushed Zach Gowens, seated in a wheelchair, down the flight of stairs. This segment is one of the most uncomfortable beatdowns in WWE.
I don't because, I didn't take it. They brought in a stunt double to take that particular fall, down the stairs tied to a wheelchair. This guy looked just like me except he had two feet, which is pretty cool to see but right before we cut, Vince asked me if I wanted to take the bump. And I looked at him and I said, 'Are you crazy?Zach Gowens about his wheelchair segment with Brock Lesnar
Addressing the wheelchair segment, the 40-year-old shockingly revealed that WWE used a stunt double to take the stairway bump. However, Gowens stated that Vince McMahon was hoping that he would want to perform the segment. But the former WWE Superstar was firmly against risking his body for the sake of a mere segment.
