After running for three seasons, NBC has announced that “Young Rock” will not be returning for another season. The decision was taken when the show was not included in the line-up for the next fall. It was based on the life of Dwayne Johnson and the people around him.
The show depicted the life of The Rock, growing up in a wrestling family. His family members included High Chief Peter Maivia, Rocky Johnson, Afa and Sika, and many other Samoan legends. Multiple WWE Hall of Famers were also portrayed on the show.
When the lineup for the fall season was announced by NBC earlier in the year, Young Rock was not included in it. At the time, the future of the show was not decided, according to officials at NBC. Therefore, it was not shocking when the show was canceled by the network.
The show first aired in 2021 and had an impressive first season. The episodes averaged more than 3 million viewers per episode. The viewership decreased in the subsequent year, as season 2 only managed to get over 2 million viewers on average.
The series was hit with a decrease in viewership again when it moved to Friday nights. It was in direct competition with Friday Night SmackDown. As a result, the average viewership came down to a mere 1.4 million per episode.
WWE legends who were shown on “Young Rock”
Growing up in a wrestling family, Dwayne Johnson was no stranger to WWE legends. His father, Rocky Johnson and grandfather, Peter Maivia were respected figures in the industry and hence had a lot of friends. The show often had scenes from wrestling events that showed viewers the wrestlers and people from the industry.
Legends like The Iron Sheik, The Macho Man, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, and Vince McMahon were often seen on the show. As the seasons progressed and the character of The Rock debuted in WWE, he met his fellow Attitude Era wrestlers. Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, The Undertaker, and many others were featured on the show.
Apart from the wrestling legends, several other celebrities have also made cameos on the show. Personalities like Cyndi Lauper, Liberace, Sean Connery, and others were a part of the show. Interestingly, the role of Cyndi Lauper was played by former WWE Women’s Champion Becky Lynch.
