What is the greatest XI in football history, according to the popular AI tool ChatGPT? It is a broad question with no correct or incorrect answers. Fans across the world have their opinions on the players to be included.
However, most football fans would agree that only a select group of footballers, including leading contenders like Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo, deserve to be on the shortlist.
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool that, thanks to AI technology, can hold human-like conversations and more. You can ask pretty much anything and get a comprehensive answer. Sometimes the answers are strange or outright wrong, but it does an excellent job overall. Let’s see if its football knowledge is up to par.

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon

The Italian made his debut in 1995 and is yet to retire. More than 25 years on from his breathtaking debut at Parma, Buffon is still going strong at his boyhood club. Having won numerous Serie A titles and a World Cup , there is not much left to achieve for the 45-year old. Apart from winning the Champions League, of course.
Right-back: Cafu

The dynamic right-back has won two World Cups with Brazil, and revolutionized the position we are familiar with currently. He is also Brazil’s most internationally capped player.
Centre-back: Franco Baresi

The ‘Milan man of the century,’ heroically captained the Rossinieri out of the Serie B and into the club’s most decorated period. He was at the heart of arguably the greatest back-line of all time, and is undoubtedly one of the best ever.
Centre-back: Franz Beckenbauer

The German revolutionised football, inventing the role of an attacking sweeper. He captained West Germany to a World Cup and a Euros, and was at the heart of the Bayern Munich side that won three consecutive European Cups.
Left-back: Paolo Maldini

Maldini is a legendary left-back and a centre-back, and played alongside Baresi during Milan’s glory days. Like Baresi, he spent his entire career there, winning 7 Serie A titles.

Zinedine Zidane

Zidane was a true artist with the ball at his feet who won everything during his illustrious career. His transition into management was impeccable too, winning three Champions Leagues in a row with Real Madrid.
Diego Maradona

In terms of natural talent, very few can rival Diego. He was a man of extremes – and nothing showcases this better than his performance against England in the 1986 World Cup. He infamously scored with his hand, before scoring the ‘Goal of the Century’ a few minutes later.
Johan Cruyff

One of the smartest minds to be involved with this sport, Cruyff was a pioneer. Johan can be introduced in many ways, but he is perhaps best described as the on-field conductor of the ‘Total Football’ philosophy.

Right-forward: Lionel Messi
