McLaren star Oscar Piastri is the standout driver of the 2025 F1 season. When fans expected a close title fight between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, the Australian driver shocked the paddock by a string of impressive performances. The 24-year-old has defied expectations and established himself as the favorite for this year’s title. Now, F1 presenter Martin Brundle has asserted that Piastri can go on to claim his maiden title this year.

Oscar Piastri has won four out of the first six rounds this year, a staggering feat for a driver who is just in his third F1 season. The 24-year-old managed to outperform Lando Norris to such an extent that the Briton appears to be struggling to get back on his feet. Piastri comfortably leads the drivers’ standings from Norris and third-placed Max Verstappen.

Martin Brundle insisted that the start of the season for Piastri proved that the Australian driver is championship material in Formula 1. The way the McLaren driver has improved in his time in F1 led to Prost labeling him as a ‘mighty’ driver. The F1 presenter was impressed to see a young driver rapidly learn things at such an high level when facing rivals like Verstappen and Norris.

He’s won four of the last six and is just looking like absolute world championship material. I think his rate of improvement has been pretty mighty, and he picks things up really quickly.

Martin Brundle said on Sky F1 podcast

Oscar Piastri arrived in surprising ‘style’ in 2025

The Australian driver made his F1 debut in 2023 with McLaren, albeit after the infamous contract saga with Alpine. Since his debut with the Woking-based team, Piastri has been quite close to Lando Norris on-track. The 24-year-old impressed the entire paddock in the past two seasons. However, his performances were never beyond Norris’ pace on most occasions.

In 2024, Lando Norris found himself in a close title battle against Max Verstappen. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri was not even close to the title fight upfront. Ultimately, this allowed McLaren to implement team orders to assist Norris’ bid. This would’ve had an impact on Piastri mentally as he was inevitably treated like a number 2 driver.

However, things have changed this season. It is Oscar Piastri who is now the lead McLaren driver with Norris struggling to catch up. Martin Brundle reckoned that the Australian driver had shown such a potential towards the latter half of last season. Though, even Brundle did not expect Piastri to bounce back as quickly as he did.

Towards the end of last year, I think we saw this kind of potential. Did I expect it to arrive in such style so quickly? Probably no, I didn’t.

Oscar Piastri added

Certainly, Oscar Piastri has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Formula 1. The McLaren driver is the favorite to win the world title this year. Though, it is likely that the 24-year-old will face stiffer challenge from Norris and Verstappen in the coming races, he is well aware of how to manage such situations. If things fall in the right place for Piastri in the coming races, it is possible that he will indeed clinch his maiden F1 title this year.
