Barbora Krejcikova enters the second round after Zarina Diyas retired in the first set of the first round clash between the pair. The Czech was leading the set 5-2 at that point and looking strong in doing the same. Her opponent retired with a left leg problem, handing Barbora some early rest before facing Leylah.

18-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez won her opening match 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 against world No. 46 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine after an electrifying showing in the third set, a set that she will have to play 2-3 times in order to get past Krejcikova in the 2nd round clash. “I’m very happy with myself. I fought for every point…she’s a great player,” Fernandez said.

The heat in Tokyo was a battle in itself. “I tried to tell myself I’m good — I just got to fight through it, get over that hurdle,” said the Canadian.

Barbora Krejcikova Vs Leylah Fernandez: Prediction

Krejcikova
Krejcikova comes into the clash in a rich vein of form and has titles to show for it

The Czech superstar enters the match as clear favourite, both on paper and on form. She has won the Strasbourg, Roland Garros and Prague Open titles in succession and also started the Olympics in a winning fashion, albeit aided by an injury to her opponent. In comparison, Leylah has had little rest, playing her match less than 12 hours after attending the Olympic Walk ceremony.

Prediction: Krejcikova to brush aside the teenager within 2 sets.
