Barbora Krejcikova enters the second round after Zarina Diyas retired in the first set of the first round clash between the pair. The Czech was leading the set 5-2 at that point and looking strong in doing the same. Her opponent retired with a left leg problem, handing Barbora some early rest before facing Leylah.

18-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez won her opening match 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 against world No. 46 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine after an electrifying showing in the third set, a set that she will have to play 2-3 times in order to get past Krejcikova in the 2nd round clash. “I’m very happy with myself. I fought for every point…she’s a great player,” Fernandez said. 

The heat in Tokyo was a battle in itself. “I tried to tell myself I’m good — I just got to fight through it, get over that hurdle,” said the Canadian.
