In Short
  • Draymond Green responded to Charles Barkley's claim that the Warriors' dynasty is over, emphasizing their competitive spirit.
  • Green acknowledged the challenges ahead due to injuries and the aging roster but remains optimistic about the team's legacy.
  • Barkley maintained that the Warriors' run has ended, citing the difficulties of older teams and the franchise's cap situation.

Draymond Green and Charles Barkley had patched their differences and became a comic duo whenever they appeared on Inside the NBA on TNT.

Now, after the Golden State Warriors ended their season at the play-in stage, it was time for the four-time champion to return to the studio.

Even if they are broadcasting via ESPN, the Michigan native is contractually obligated to TNT. Therefore, the return to the show was seamless as Green stepped in for Shaquille O’Neal before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semis.

As usual, the former Defensive Player of the Year arrived exchanging embraces and pleasantries with Barkley, Kenny Smith, and host Ernie Johnson.

Then, they got around to discussing the Warriors’ struggles this past season. At this point, the Round Mound of Rebound decided to be honest with his outlook for the team.

Sports are for young people. You hope to have a great long career. Nobody wins when they are 37,38.

Charles Barkley said

After he said this, Smith asked Draymond Green if he believed what the Hall of Famer said.

The goal is just to not look like you in a Houston Rockets uniform… We are always going to try to compete. When you win championships, the goal will always be to try to reach that level.

Draymond Green replied

This entire exchange was unexpectedly a little tense, as the latter essentially trolled Charles Barkley first, before diving into how his Warriors are different.

Draymond Green agrees championship is a long shot

It seems Draymond Green has a different perspective on how his Golden State Warriors are built when compared to other teams featuring veteran players.

I think as you grow older, you have to redefine what is success… Success may not be for us a championship. That’s the way it goes… It may not be realistic towards a championship.

Draymond Green said

The 36-year-old first pointed out that Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody will be out for a significant part of the upcoming 2026-27 season. Therefore, it will be difficult to mount a championship run.

However, he still believes that the team’s past success will motivate them to go as far as they can. If they do not win another title, they would not be disappointed, knowing they have given it their all.

They are realistic about how far a veteran team can go, especially with injuries piling up and younger teams taking over the postseason.

At the same time, if that continuous effort to get there eventually materializes even after Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, and Jimmy Butler leave, they would be happy to have helped continue the Warriors’ pedigree.

Charles Barkley continues to insist the Warriors’ run is over

Even though Draymond Green explained how his team is gearing up for another run next year, Charles Barkley was still of the opinion that the Warriors’ run is over.

It’s over for the Warriors. No disrespect… It ends for every old team. You had your run, you get old, you let Klay go. You and Steph on the backside of your careers. It just passed you by.

Charles Barkley said

The former league MVP made it clear he was not disrespecting the veteran players or the franchise. Rather, he feels that their past choices have made it difficult for the dynasty to continue.

After Barkley added that both Draymond Green and Stephen Curry should leave the Warriors to find success elsewhere, Kenny Smith wondered why they could not do it in the Bay.

At this point, Barkley pointed to the franchise’s cap situation, which will not allow them to sign good young players who can help these veterans win another championship. Green kind of agreed to it by pointing to the hug after their last game this season.
