Colts WR Josh Downs made it clear that he won't treat Caleb Downs like brother on the field as they will be lining up opposite to each other.

Four years after Josh Downs entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick, he watched his younger brother, Caleb Downs, get drafted 11th overall. It would have been even better if the brothers were selected by the same NFL team, but Josh is a star wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts, while Caleb will line up in the secondary of the Dallas Cowboys.

When the Cowboys called the 21-year-old’s safety’s name, Josh picked up the Cowboys hat and wore it the entire night, even outside. Their sister confronted him, and he answered because he wanted to enjoy the moment.

However, they can be brothers all they want off the field, but when they step onto the turf, they are rivals.

That’s like head-to-head, all game. He got drafted, and I was like, ‘We play y’all this year,’ and he got all hyped. It’s fun and games, but I’ve gotta let him know he’s the little brother.

Josh Downs graduated from the University of North Carolina. Since entering the league, he has played 47 games for the Colts, catching 198 passes for 2140 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. He has also returned 32 times (punt+kickoff).

Caleb, on the other hand, played for Alabama and later finished his college career with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Josh and Caleb come from a family of athletes. Their father, Gary, played running back for NC State and is currently the assistant head coach of the Wolfpack. Their uncle, Donald André Bly, is a retired NFL cornerback who won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams (the Los Angeles Rams). Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the New York Jets appointed Bly as their assistant defensive backs coach.

The Downs brothers aren’t the only siblings in the league. Stefon Diggs and Trevon Diggs, Joey Bosa and Nick Bosa, and Sydney Brown and Chase Brown make their presence felt.

The Dallas Cowboys desperately wanted Caleb Downs

On draft day, owner/ general manager Jerry Jones and VP of player personnel Will McClay reached out to the Cleveland Browns, who owned the 9th overall pick, for a trade. Downs staying on the board for that long was unexpected, but it did not seem like he would fall out of the top-10. So, the Cowboys decided to make an aggressive move.

On ESPN’s show “The Pick Is In,” it was revealed that the Cowboys called Cleveland and offered the 12th and 20th overall picks plus a fifth-round pick for the 9th and 24th overall picks.

The Browns declined to do business. Dallas then traded with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire the 11th pick and drafted Downs.

Cowboys coach gave his honest first impression of Caleb Downs

Dallas brought in Christian Parker from the Eagles earlier this year. Parker identified Downs as his primary target and got him at 11.

Following the rookie minicamp, Parker revealed that Downs is as good as he was advertised prior to the draft.

Premium instincts. You can tell the way he directs traffic out there, the way he reads and reacts, the way his brain is connected to his feet.

Downs signed a four-year $28.95 million rookie contract with the Cowboys, which also features a $17.5 million signing bonus. He will wear number 13 on the back of his Cowboys jersey.
