- Jonathan Gannon cites quarterback Jordan Love as a key reason for joining the Packers.
- Gannon replaces Jeff Hafley as the new defensive coordinator after a challenging tenure with the Cardinals.
- The Packers have signed veteran QB Tyrod Taylor as a backup for Jordan Love.
Jonathan Gannon no longer has to worry about creating schemes to contain Jordan Love. That’s because both are now part of the same team.
Gannon managed the Arizona Cardinals for three years. He finished with a 15-36 record. The Packers quickly moved in and appointed the 43-year-old as the new defensive coordinator of the team, replacing Jeff Hafley, who accepted an offer from the Miami Dolphins to become their head coach.
During a recent press conference, reporters asked Gannon the reason behind choosing the Packers over other vacancies.
[Quarterback] Jordan Love, that was a huge thing to me, I think he’s in the top tier… He can make all the throws. He doesn’t give you chances to take the ball away. He protects the football. He’s mobile. Smart, obviously … Just competing against him, accuracy, decision-making, his legs. He’s hard to defend.

Love is 2-0 against the Cardinals since taking over as the Packers quarterback from Aaron Rodgers. In those two victories, Love has completed 41 passes for 437 yards, 5 touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 108.4.
Jonathan Gannon wanted to link up with Matt LaFleur
Arizona was Gannon’s first foray into head coaching. Before taking the Cardinals’ job, he had played several defensive roles for the Eagles, Colts, Vikings, Titans, and Falcons.

Gannon tried his best to steady the Cardinals’ ship, but faced difficulties in keeping his quarterback, Kyler Murray, healthy. When the Heisman Trophy winner and former first overall pick played, Arizona won games. Murray went 8-9 in 2024 and 2-3 the following year before suffering a season-ending injury, the Cardinals won just three games in 2025.
It was a time for a change, and one of the league’s pioneer franchises decided to sack Gannon and release Murray. Kyler signed a one-year contract with the Vikings, while the Packers picked up Gannon to manage the defense.
Gannon had other offers on the table, but chose Green Bay because he loved what the front office has been trying to build. More importantly, he wanted to get a feel for head coach Matt LaFleur.
Obviously, Matt [LaFleur], having known him for a little bit of time, competed against them for a decent amount of time, it was really cool I got the opportunity to come link up with him… I think Matt’s a savant.
LaFleur’s future was under scrutiny after the Packers crashed out in the wildcard round. The Packers eased the tension by extending LaFleur’s contract, although the details of the paperwork remain unclear.
The Packers find a new backup for Jordan Love
After the Packers extended LaFleur’s stay in Wisconsin, Love declared that he wants to repay his gratitude by winning the Super Bowl.
I am exceedingly confident we have the right people to achieve our goal.

But before that, the Packers needed to find a veteran backup for Love after Malik Willis signed with the Dolphins. And the Packers found him. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network tweeted that the Packers are bringing in veteran journeyman signal-caller Tyrod Taylor.
