In Short
  • MS Dhoni's emotional lap of appreciation at Chepauk may mark his final appearance in CSK colors.
  • Chennai Super Kings lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad, pushing them closer to elimination from IPL playoffs.
  • Dhoni hinted at retirement, stating his body feels "a little weak," but did not rule out another season.

An intensely emotional atmosphere settled over Chepauk, Chennai Super Kings’ home ground, after a dismal five-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. The occasion was most likely MS Dhoni’s last appearance at the venue, given the anticipation over his retirement.

The defeat to SRH pushed CSK to the brink of elimination, with their qualification hopes depending on the results of the remaining IPL games. Batting first, CSK posted a competitive 180/7, guided by knocks from Dewald Brevis (44 off 27), Kartik Sharma (32 off 19), and Sanju Samson (27 off 13).

However, the visitors chased it down in 19 overs, with six balls remaining. For SRH, Ishan Kishan top-scored with 70 runs off 47 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen contributed with a crucial 47 runs off 26 balls.

Despite their team being effectively out of playoff contention, the CSK faithful stayed deep into the night for a specific reason: to catch a glimpse of MS Dhoni. Having sat out the entire season due to multiple injuries, the 44-year-old aging icon made his first stadium appearance. However, the event was marked by the saddening realization that it might be the final time ‘Thala’ was seen at Chepauk in a yellow jersey.

About an hour after the match ended, Dhoni led the CSK squad out for an emotional lap of appreciation around the boundary ropes. While the younger players hit souvenir balls into the crowd, he walked slowly, empty-handed, waving to every single fan in the stands.

The five-time IPL-winning captain soaked in the thunderous applause that he received from the home fans, as well as the chants of ‘Dhoni, Dhoni’ that reverberated through the Chepauk.

As the cameras zoomed in on MS Dhoni‘s face, he seemed overwhelmed with emotion, almost teary-eyed, as the team bid adieu to the Chennai fans for the season. Adding to the immense nostalgia, Dhoni also stopped near the presentation area, where he embraced former Chennai and India teammate Suresh Raina, who was on commentary duty. The two shared an emotional hug, chatting and laughing on the pitch for a while.

MS Dhoni may announce his retirement when the season concludes, as indicated by his diminished role and influence within the team. The key question remains whether he will participate in his potential final T20 match against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 24.

Suresh Raina shares what MS Dhoni revealed about his ‘future’ after CSK’s final home game of IPL 2026

Former Indian batter Suresh Raina revealed details of a conversation that he had with MS Dhoni following Chennai Super Kings’ final home game of IPL 2026. Raina surprisingly predicted that the 44-year-old might still have another season left in him.

Dhoni has missed all 13 of the franchise’s matches this summer, primarily due to fitness issues. While he had initially been ruled out for the first few weeks of the competition, his return kept being delayed, and it has now reached a point where CSK only has one remaining game. He attended the home game against SRH, where he participated in the lap of honor after the match and met up with Suresh Raina.

Speaking about the brief interaction, Raina disclosed that he asked Dhoni about his future in the IPL. The 39-year-old shared that the legendary wicket-keeper batter admitted that his body had become ‘weak’, but did not completely rule out the possibility of playing another IPL season. Suresh Raina stated that he even encouraged Dhoni to continue playing, with IPL 2026 merely being a ‘missed call’.

I told him [MS Dhoni] ‘you have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won’t count. You have to come back next year’. He said ‘my body is a little weak’ – I said ‘we are not believing anything. You have to play next year’.

Throughout the season, MSD has largely avoided traveling with the squad to venues, with the belief that it could overshadow the other players in the team. Furthermore, it is believed that he chose not to be part of the playing XI against SRH to prevent upsetting the balance.
