In Short
  • Caitlin Clark faced backlash from fans after the Indiana Fever announced her injury just hours before a game.
  • Head coach Stephanie White admitted the team was aware of Clark's back soreness earlier but delayed the announcement.
  • Clark requested fans to show grace, emphasizing the mental fatigue athletes experience with injuries.

The Indiana Fever courted backlash from their own fans after announcing just two hours before their game against the Portland Fire that Caitlin Clark would not play.

There was no previous intimation about her probability, which is why fans felt that the franchise had manipulated ticket holders until the last second.

Usually, the team should inform the league and announce it publicly hours before. In this instance, head coach Stephanie White acknowledged that they knew Clark had a sore back in the morning. But they waited until late to announce it.

The league gave them a warning, but fans ensured the Fever organization understood how they would react if this were to repeat. Despite 14,010 fans showing up on the official game sheet, swathes of empty seats said otherwise.

White and others in the organization received a lot of backlash, and continued to receive so even after they changed Caitlin Clark’s availability for their next game against the Golden State Valkyries.

There’s moments where maybe I get in my head a little bit, that’s understandable. I need to have grace with myself. I need people to give me a little bit of grace, too. When you go through so many things, it becomes a little traumatizing… I’m doing everything I can to put myself in the best position I can

Caitlin Clark told reporters

This was the superstar asking her fans and those of the Indiana Fever to give her and her team some grace. It has been difficult for her to overcome the mental fatigue that comes with injuries. For them to pile on over a late announcement was compounding matters.

Caitlin Clark’s mother found out 40 minutes earlier that she was not going to play

It seems Caitlin Clark was aware of all the narratives that were circulating on social media. That is why, when Forbes Sports’ Tony East asked the point guard about the sequence of events until the announcement, the superstar said this:

Woke up Tuesday, feeling sore… When I told my mom that I wasn’t going to play the game, it was 4:47 PM. You guys find out (at) 5:20 PM. One of the most important people in my life finds out 40 mins before you guys.

Caitlin Clark said

She was visibly irked by the entire discourse and even went on to reveal what she ate for breakfast. Then she made it clear that moments before she informed her mother, the two-time All-Star was intending to play.

However, her back was sore, and Clark, along with her medical staff, her personal physio, and the coaches, decided that it was better she sat out their game against the Fire.

The Iowa native pointed out that every athlete goes through this. Therefore, fans need to temper their expectations and understand that, practically, it is not possible to be 100% every day.

Caitlin Clark’s head coach shrugs off reporters’ questions about WNBA’s warning

After Caitlin Clark answered questions about the botched injury announcement, it was time for head coach Stephanie White to face reporters. The Athletic’s James Boyd first asked her for a reaction to the league’s warning.

My reaction is: for what?… Because we did things the right way?

Stephanie White responded

As a follow-up, Boyd asked how reporters would know what the coach or the medical staff can inform them. To this, the 48-year-old shrugged her shoulders and said, ‘I’m sorry.’

Basically, the former point guard was trying to be as dismissive about the entire fiasco as possible. She also remained coy about admitting to making a mistake or intentionally omitting the information that ended up receiving that much backlash.
