With the New York Jets finishing on a 3-14 record, their playoff drought extended to a 16th year. To end this dark period, the Jets brought back a player who knows the franchise better than most. Geno Smith entered the NFL as the 39th overall pick in the 2013 draft. Four years later, he packed his bags and moved across town to sign with the Giants.
Nine years and detours to LA, Seattle, and Vegas later, Smith is back in New Jersey, intending to help Aaron Glenn turn the fortunes of the Jets around.
I mean, that’d be like a story in a movie, right? I mean, it’s kind of like one of those superhero movies. But you know, my life is based on reality, and we got to focus on getting better every single day.

During his first stint in New Jersey, Smith registered a couple of productive years. He went 12-18 before an ACL tear in 2016 ended his Jets adventure.
Smith had his best years in Seattle. But he sat on the bench the first two years, backing up Russell Wilson. After Wilson left to play for the Broncos, Smith took over as the starter. Over the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Seahawks, he passed for 7,906 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Ahead of the 2025 season, he signed with the Raiders. Smith threw a league-high 17 interceptions behind an offensive line. He was sacked 55 times (most in the league). The Raiders released him, and he ended up back with the Gang Green.
Geno Smith praises Jets head coach Aaron Glenn
Glenn coached Detroit’s defense before the Jets persuaded him to take the head coaching job. Glenn was drafted by the Jets in 1994 and played in the backfield for seven years before exploring new challenges. So, it was a no-brainer for Glenn to accept the Jets’ proposal to coach the team.

His first major move after taking charge was replacing Super Bowl winner Aaron Rodgers with journeyman quarterback Justin Fields. The Fields’ experiment failed miserably. Moreover, the defense regressed, and they went the entire year without registering one interception.
Despite a bad debut year, Glenn remained, and Smith believes that he has done a good job of improving the culture of the team.
I see a lot of potential in this team. I think AG is doing a great job of showing us the vision of what he wants & how he wants us to go out there & play & be [the] Jets & for me, as the QB, I know there’s a lot of work to be put in.

Geno Smith is excited to play with Breece Hall
One of the first Jets players to link up with Smith after leaving the Raiders was running back Breece Hall.
I went to where Breece was at the minute I knew I was going to be here… Breece is a great guy, I got that feeling from the first moment I met him, but he’s also a great player, and so again, I want to try and bring out the best in him, and I know he’s going to push me as well.

Hall started his Jets career in promising fashion, but it was cut short due to an ACL injury. In the following three years, Hall logged 850+ yards on each occasion. The Jets placed a franchise tag on the Iowa alum in March. In May, Hall signed a three-year, $45.75 million contract extension, making him the third-highest-paid running back in the league.
