Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca are in their first Grand Slam quarter-finals in their careers. Both players began their careers in the juniors and ultimately achieved fame as professional players; they will now face each other for a place in the semi-finals of the French Open. Mensik has defeated two top 15 players at the event and will be eager to secure his place in the final four.

Fonseca has been brilliant at Roland Garros. For a player who has dealt with two injuries this season, there were not many expectations for him at the French Open. But he has beaten two top players in the circuit, including former World No.1 Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros. Three more wins and he has the French Open title in his hands.

Jakub Mensik vs. Joao Fonseca: Match Preview

Jakub Mensik won his maiden ATP title at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami last year. However, after that, he failed to maintain his form and quickly dropped out of the top 20. This year, he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, but was forced to pull out of the event due to injury.

His best run on clay ahead of the French Open came at the Madrid Open, where he reached the fourth round before losing to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev. In the other two clay events, he won a total of one match. But things changed at the Roland Garros, the Czech star defeated Mariano Navone in five sets in the second round, before beating Alex de Minaur 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. In the fourth round, he beat World No.11 Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3.

On the other hand, João Fonseca gradually overcame his poor start to the season in March, recording three wins in two tournaments. Before that, he had only one win in three tournaments. At the Monte Carlo Masters, he reached his first clay quarter-finals and then lost to Ben Shelton in the last eight of the Munich Open.

However, he witnessed a blip in form at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, where he recorded no match victories. But at the Roland Garros, he found his rhythm, beating Luka Pavlovic 7-6(6) 6-4 6-2 in the first round before overcoming Dino Prizmic 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. He triumphed over Novak Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 and then overpowered 15th seed Casper Ruud 7-5 7-6(8) 5-7 6-2.

Jakub Mensik vs. Joao Fonseca: Match Prediction

Jakub Mensik has been far from consistent on the court this season, but he knows how to spring some surprises. He did that at the Miami Open last year, winning the ATP Masters title after beating Novak Djokovic in the final. He will be banking on that as he faces Joao Fonseca in the quarter-finals at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Czech Republic star has faced Fonseca just once on tour, and that came at the Next Gen ATP Finals, which Fonseca eventually won. Since then, the duo has not crossed paths, and fans will be eager to see them compete in big tournaments. Fonseca has been excellent at the French Open, and he’s undoubtedly confident in his game.

He has not won a title this season or reached the semi-finals, but at Roland Garros, he will hope that this could end. A win over Mensik will set him at the precipice of his history at the French Open. He’s the favorite to win the match, but he has to be worried about Mensik’s overwhelming big-serving technique.

Match Prediction: Joao Fonseca to win in five sets.
