AJ Brown moving to the New England Patriots is a match made in heaven, believes Ryan Clark. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s prior connection with Brown will help him settle into the offense easily.

Moments after Adam Schefter announced that the Philadelphia Eagles were trading Brown to the Patriots, Clark appeared on SportsCenter to talk about it.

AJ Brown is a true No. 1. Even with the [New England] Patriots making it to the Super Bowl last year, Drake Maye being the runner up in the [league] MVP race, they didn’t perform well offensively throughout the playoffs. Now you add [AJ] Brown the true No. 1.

Earlier, they signed 26-year-old Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract. Doubs largely played as WR2 at Green Bay. He can be a WR1, but when a bona fide superstar is willing to join the team for over a year, the Patriots finally made the call.

Romeo Doubs, who, in my opinion, would be better than anyone they had in their wide receiver room last year…

Ryan Clark added

The Patriots parted ways with Stefon Diggs, and with Kayshon Boutte poised to follow him out of Boston, Vrabel went to work.

But this is all about Drake Maye. It’s about Drake Maye’s ability to throw the deep ball to create in the pocket and give the wide receivers a second chance… This is a match made in heaven for New England, and the biggest thing is this: Mike Vrabel knows AJ Brown’s personality. He knows the guy [for whom] the Super Bowl wasn’t enough because he didn’t perform at the level he wanted…They are gonna have to give him the ball, they are gonna have to keep him happy. Do that, [and for] this team the sky could be the limit.

Brown won a ring with the Eagles in 2024-25. However, he only caught 67 passes for 1079 yards and scored 7 touchdowns. In contrast, the Eagles’ run game emerged as the best in the league, led by Saquon Barkley, who bagged the OPOY award.

The following year, the offense regressed further. After a few frustrating weeks, Brown requested to be traded. General manager Howie Roseman blocked the trade. He ended the year with 78 receptions for 1003 yards and scored 7 TDs in 15 appearances. The Eagles were knocked out in the wildcard round.

Despite one year remaining on his three-year, $93 million contract, signed in 2024, Brown waited to be traded. The Eagles announced it will only happen after the June 1, 4 p.m. deadline. As soon as that was over, the Eagles traded Brown to the Patriots. According to Schefter, the Eagles are getting a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in the deal.

AJ Brown said his goodbyes to the Eagles

Even though Brown grew up at Starkville, Mississippi, he always supported the Patriots and their legendary quarterback Tom Brady. The Ole Miss alum posted videos of his jersey collection that included a signed shirt from Brady.

After the trade went through on Monday, Brown shared a couple more of his childhood pictures wearing Patriots merch.

In a different post, Brown wrote a goodbye message for the Eagles fans.

Eagles Nation, Thank you for welcoming my family and me with open arms from day one. This city, this locker room, and this fan base will always hold a special place in my heart… Playing for this city has been an honor, and I’m thankful for every moment I had in midnight green. Thank you, Philly. Much love always. God bless.
