Karl-Anthony Towns has been impressive for the New York Knicks throughout the playoffs this year, and he was so once again in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night. The win over the San Antonio Spurs means the Knicks have taken a 1-0 lead in the series and have the home-court advantage in their favor.
After a slow start in the first half that saw them trail by seven points, the Knicks roared back in the second half. In the end, they registered a 105-95 victory over the Spurs in Game 1 at the Frost Bank Center. The win extended the Knicks’ playoff winning streak to 12 games.
After the game, Towns got emotional when asked about playing in his first NBA Finals.
To be honest with y’all, I don’t know what it was, but I just felt a calming (presence) and a peace that had to be coming from the women above. I felt like a kid. It was just fun out here. I felt like I was seeing her in the stands. It was really comforting. It felt like a certain presence that was here that was very comforting and very loving.

The Knicks center lost his mother during the pandemic in 2020. It was a difficult period for Karl-Anthony Towns as he lost six other family members during that period. However, the big man felt his mother’s presence, which motivated him to play well and give his side an important 1-0 lead in the series.
The Knicks are looking to win their first championship in 53 years and are off to the perfect start in the NBA Finals. There were questions whether they have the team to go all the way, but after recording consecutive clean sweeps in the previous two rounds, they have shown that they are legit contenders to win it all this year.

KAT looked free, confident, and at peace, and it showed on the biggest stage. 🏀✨👏
If he’s calm, the rest of the league should be worried.

Karl-Anthony Towns on guarding Victor Wembanyama
Heading into the NBA Finals, the major talking point was how the Knicks would plan their defensive schemes against Victor Wembanyama. While the Frenchman went on to record a double-double as he scored 26 points to go along with 12 rebounds, Towns did a fine job of making it hard for him.

After the Game 1 win, Towns shared his thoughts on the challenge of guarding Wembanyama.
He’s a one-of-a-kind player in this NBA and the league has ever seen. You just try to make it as difficult as possible.

The Knicks mixed their defensive coverages against Wembanyama. There have been questions about which Towns will turn up in every game. However, the six-time All-Star found himself as the primary defender most of the time and was a defensive wall against the Spurs center.
While Wembanyama scored 26 points, he shot at just 29% from the field and committed six turnovers. The Knicks will be hoping to see more of Towns in the coming games of the NBA Finals.
