Entering the NBA Finals, most fans and analysts predicted that Victor Wembanyama would continue his Western Conference Finals form.

The San Antonio Spurs superstar had an exceptional three games in the battle against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

The observation was that his skills with the ball in his hands, his height, and his motivation were enough to stop the hot-streaking Knicks from winning their first title in more than five decades.

Some even labeled him as similar to Michael Jordan, and even wondered whether there would be any answer to his otherworldly combination of size and ability. Now, it seems one Knicks player had the answer.

Imma tell the Spurs fans this: y’all got a problem. Y’all have a serious problem… The Defensive Player of the World got exposed last night… Yes, Towns played the best defensive game of his life. But offensively, he showed the world that Wemby can’t guard him. He is a matchup problem for the Spurs.

Kendrick Perkins said on First Take

The former NBA champion pointed out how Karl-Anthony Towns managed to draw Victor Wembanyama away from the paint. His presence at the perimeter was enough to open up lanes for his teammates.

That is how Jalen Brunson managed to dominate in the second half with his numerous drives inside. Moreover, whenever the Frenchman tried his best to score and keep the Spurs’ lead, Perkins talked about how KAT managed to stop him from doing so.

With such an effort on both ends of the floor, Wembanyama could not impose his will in the way he did in the West Finals. Kendrick Perkins expects the Knicks to follow this scheme in the next few games.

Victor Wembanyama could not pass Karl-Anthony Towns

Kendrick Perkins was not the only analyst to realize that Karl-Anthony Towns managed to upend Victor Wembanyama in Game 1. When Brian Windhorst appeared on Get Up, he explained how a simple strategy changed the outcome.

They played right to a very well-designed game plan. They didn’t do any trick defense or trick coverage on Victor Wembanyama… They put their center on him, and Victor Wembanyama could not pass Karl Towns. Karl Towns had one of the best defensive performances of his life.

Brian Windhorst said

Windy made it clear that it was not a trick strategy. Rather, using the Knicks center’s ability to operate on the perimeter was enough to cause havoc.

Not only was Wembanyama caught off guard with KAT’s quick blow-by’s, but he also could not do much once the six-time All-Star defended the ‘Alien’ well.

Once that strategy started working, it allowed Jalen Brunson to operate. Windy expects the Knicks to deploy something similar until the Spurs manage to counter those schemes.

Spurs have to adjust their strategy for Victor Wembanyama around Karl-Anthony Towns

When Victor Wembanyama faced the twin towers of the Oklahoma City Thunder, he had to overcome Isaiah Hartenstein‘s physicality and Chet Holmgren‘s perimeter presence.

Against the Knicks, Karl-Anthony Towns was a combination of those two. When it is just one person doing both, it tends to put pressure on the opposing big man, Wemby in this instance.

The 22-year-old also looked tired late in the game. After all, he was coming off a grueling seven-game series against the Thunder. If anything, the Spurs have to adjust their schemes, or risk burning out their most important player.

They have to figure out how to stop Wembanyama from getting pulled away from the paint while on defense. At the same time, they also need to create better open looks or situations for him to score. Only then can they avoid losing their second home game.
