There might have never been a better time than now to be a Chad Gable fan. Setting himself free from the guise of a mask has turned him into a fan favorite. He’s now set for his first match on Raw in over a year. The former US Olympian will take on Rusev on this Monday’s Raw in Baltimore.
For the unversed, Gable went after Rusev and his aide Ethan Page last Monday after ‘The Lion of Bulguria’ despicably ripped Rey Mysterio‘s mask off his face. Penta, who had just retained his Intercontinental Championship in a stellar match against his idol laid down over Rey to cover his exposed face.
Rusev and Page were grinning from ear to ear over what they had done. However, it didn’t take long for Gable to make a beeline for the heels and wipe them out singlehandedly. The former leader of the Alpha Academy eventually handed Mysterio’s mask over to Penta and Dragon Lee, as both were attending to a grounded Mysterio.
‘The Master of 619’ put the mask back on and stood up along with Penta and Lee. The luchadores gave a big up to Chad Gable for reaffirming his respect for the Lucha Libre tradition. With the Minnesota native just hours away from duking it out with Rusev on Raw, he has addressed this being the first stop on a very important path that he has defined for himself.
The acceptance I’ve been given by EVERYONE upon dropping the mask and returning to #WWERaw has been overwhelming and will be forever treasured by me.

But if I don’t perform and live up to my own expectations, it’ll all be for nothing.

Gable wrote on X that he’s been truly overwhelmed by the acceptance he’s been given since getting rid of the mask that made him the El Grande Americano. The 40-year-old further said he’s totally aware that if he doesn’t rise to the occasion now, it’ll all be for nothing. Gable is taking it as now or never and has invited the fans to come along for this ride.
It would be interesting to see how he’s booked in the coming weeks. The fans truly believe that WWE has a golden opportunity to turn Chad Gable into a main-eventer if they commit to establishing him as a top-tier talent. AJ Styles recently said on his podcast that WWE would be dumb to not capitalize on Gable with the kind of momentum he has right now.
There might not be an easier layup than making Gable chase the Intercontinental Championship en route to SummerSlam. It must be noted that he went on a mission to berate the luchadores only after losing to Penta in the latter’s WWE debut match. Now that Gable has experienced what it’s like to be underneath that mask, he would definitely want to give himself another shot to challenge Penta and beat him for the title this time around.
How did Chad Gable overcome his injury woes last year?
Chad Gable got sidelined from in-ring action in June last year to fix his shoulders. The erstwhile Shorty G has revealed the timeline of events from the point he started experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder to how he ended up getting treated for both of them. It was back in October 2024 when he noticed that his bicep tendon on the right was hurting.

The former American Alpha member experienced that something was off with it after a non-televised match with Gunther. Gable stressed that it wasn’t anybody’s fault and was actually a freak accident. He eventually figured out he had a tear in his right bicep tendon, but it wasn’t serious enough to opt for surgery. So he kept pushing through it and continued wrestling as normal.
However, the right side of his upper body started troubling him more as time progressed, and it’d result in Gable being unable to fully extend his elbow. After ultimately getting MRIs done on his shoulder, tricep and bicep tendons, the doctors found different issues. The wrestler in question had tendinitis in his right elbow, a bicep tear, and a partial rotator cuff tear as well.
It turned out that I had a slight tear in my right bicep tendon, the one that attaches to the shoulder. Nothing serious enough to require surgery. I kept wrestling, finished the tour, and carried on as normal. Progressively, the right side was giving me more trouble………..Eventually, I decided to get it checked out for my sanity. I got MRIs on my shoulder, tricep, and bicep tendons. The doctor explained to me that they found different issues

He had a complete tear of the rotator cuff in his left shoulder to add to his injury woes. In the second episode of his YouTube docuseries, Chad Gable revealed that he received a bonus surgery in addition to getting operated for his rotator cuff tear. The operation took less than an hour. However, the doctor overseeing Gable noticed that his bicep tendon was completely shredded too.
WWE's Chad Gable underwent a "bonus surgery" last year after his doctor discovered Gable's bicep tendon was "completely shredded" while operating on his torn rotator cuff:

So he repaired that as well. Dr. Dugas asked the WWE Superstar to just be patient with the process of recovery and not try to rush it. Gable also revealed that he got contacted by Triple H during that time. The WWE CCO advised Gable to treat his recovery as a job and follow the doctor’s instructions by heart. Gable returned to action in this year’s Royal Rumble match as El Grande Americano.
