On Friday, Carlos Mendoza was dismissed from his job as the manager of the New York Mets following a poor first half of the season. Following his exit, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke with him and expressed that he (Mendoza) was in a good place.

The Mets entered the game on Thursday hoping to snap a 5-game losing streak. Since their 6-4 victory last Friday, the team has dropped games to the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs.

In the doubleheader on Wednesday, the Mets made 6 errors in the second game. Their defensive woes continued on Thursday with 2 more mistakes against the Cubs in the 6th inning. They ended up losing 4-3 and got swept.

In the press conference after the game, Mendoza had sounded off on the defensive displays of the team. A few hours later, the Mets announced his departure and brought an end to his tenure.

Before joining the Mets in November 2023, Mendoza worked as a bench coach for the Yankees. On Friday, Aaron Boone was asked about his thoughts regarding this.

The Yankees manager claimed he was “surprised but not surprised” by the situation that unfolded. He then revealed speaking to him and briefly mentioned the slump their rivals had last season.

I talked to Mendy (Carlos Mendoza). Obviously, it’s a tough situation over there right now with what they’ve been through this year and even going back to last year. Mendy’s in a good place.

Aaron Boone told the reporters regarding Carlos Mendoza

Mendoza and the Mets had a huge slump last season. After having the best record in the league at one point at 45-24, they had a major collapse. The team went 38-55 after that and missed the playoffs on the final day, finishing with an 83-79 record.

This year, they were 7-4 after 11 games. Then the team lost 12 games in a row, its joint-longest losing streak since 2002. Despite that run, the National League side was backing him.

The loss on Thursday proved to be the final straw. On Friday, he was fired from his position, with Andy Green taking over as the interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Francisco Lindor takes the blame for Carlos Mendoza’s firing

As the New York Mets lost on Thursday, they were left with a 34-47 record after 81 games. With 50 percent of the season done and the team being 13 games behind .500, the axe fell on Carlos Mendoza. Francisco Lindor later took the blame for this development.

The Mets have struggled in the past few games. The team has made several errors, which have led to their opponents scoring.

Offensively, the team has been second-best in several games. In the 4-games against the Chicago Cubs, they got outscored 33-17.

Lindor has been a massive miss for the Mets this season. The shortstop, who has played just 26 games this season due to a calf injury, has just 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

In the clubhouse, he is looked at as a leader. With Mendoza gone, the 32-year-old took the blame for it and added that the onus was on the players.

We failed Mendy. I failed Mendy. I didn’t play to my capability to help him win as many games as we could. And, yeah, this one’s on us as well.

Francisco Lindor told the reporters regarding Carlos Mendoza

Things did not improve for the team on Friday. A 2-1 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies extended their losing run to 7. They are now 34-48, 14 games behind the .500 mark after 82 games, and have an interim manager for the rest of the season.
