Neymar was left in tears after Brazil’s Round of 16 loss to Norway at the FIFA World Cup before later announcing that the defeat marked the final international match of his career.

Brazil’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in heartbreak on Sunday as Neymar broke down in tears on the pitch after the team’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium.

The veteran forward, who entered the match as a second half substitute, was overcome with emotion after the final whistle. He fell to the turf before teammates and members of Brazil’s coaching staff gathered around him to offer support following the country’s earliest World Cup exit in more than three decades.

Brazil controlled stretches of the match but failed to convert their chances. The five time champions were awarded a first half penalty after a VAR review, but goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland denied Bruno Guimarães from the spot to keep the match level.

Norway found the breakthrough in the 79th minute when Andreas Schjelderup surged down the left flank and delivered a cross that Erling Haaland headed past Alisson. Haaland struck again in the 90th minute with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area to put Norway firmly in control.

Brazil continued to push forward. Vinícius Júnior created openings in attack, while Endrick missed a clear one-on-one opportunity earlier in the second half. Casemiro also sent a dangerous ball across the face of the goal before Nyland produced another important save late in the match.

Deep into stoppage time, Brazil were awarded another penalty after Leo Østigard was ruled to have elbowed Casemiro while contesting a header inside the penalty area. Neymar converted the spot kick to reduce the deficit, but the referee brought the match to an end moments later.

As Norway celebrated a historic victory, Neymar remained on the field in tears, reflecting the disappointment of another World Cup campaign ending before the quarterfinals. The loss marked Brazil’s earliest elimination at the tournament since 1990.

Shortly after Brazil’s elimination, Neymar confirmed that Sunday’s defeat brought his 16 year international career to an end. “I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished it here. It is now over,” Neymar said.

The 34-year-old had been doubtful for the tournament after sustaining a calf injury while playing for Santos in May. He recovered in time to make Carlo Ancelotti’s squad but did not start any of Brazil’s World Cup matches. He made his tournament debut as a substitute against Norway with the score still goalless.

Neymar’s stoppage time penalty was the 80th goal of his international career, extending his record as Brazil’s all time leading men’s scorer and moving him three goals clear of Pelé.

Although he finished as Brazil’s highest scoring men’s international player, Neymar never lifted the FIFA World Cup. Brazil’s most recent world title remains the 2002 tournament, and the team did not progress beyond the quarterfinals during any World Cup in which Neymar featured. The defeat to Norway ended Brazil’s 2026 campaign and brought one of the country’s longest serving international careers to a close.
