Before the Cleveland Cavaliers lay out the red carpet to bring back LeBron James, they need to restructure their roster in a way that entices the King. That starts with superstars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

The latter has already opted out of his player option this season, leaving the team with cap space to work with the rest of the roster. They know last year did not turn out as they intended. But that meant that they needed to work hard towards building a team that could entice the prodigal son to return.

After losing Dean Wade to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Cavs had to get something going before most of the free agents signed up for other teams. One of the ways was to hand their leading superstar an extension.

With this signing, they can show LeBron James that he can have a younger, athletic guard to play alongside him. The 41-year-old will need every bit of speed and prowess if he believes that the Cavs can help him win another championship before he retires.

Basketball fans lose their minds over Donovan Mitchell’s extension

Basketball fans were aware that the Cavaliers would restructure and sign Donovan Mitchell to another long-term contract. What they were not prepared for was the amount that he would be signing for.

When many felt he would take a pay cut to give the team enough cap space to bring back LeBron James, his signing a contract averaging $68.25 million left them shaking their heads.

Most of them felt that the dynamic guard did not prove to be as good in the playoffs as his new contract suggests. He choked when it mattered, and that is why most fans did not approve of this. Examples of which are below.

Maybe Donovan Mitchell is on the verge of breaking out of his constant losing trend in the playoffs. All he needs is someone to help him elevate his game.

Maybe LeBron James’ arrival can unlock that. However, fans felt that had the New York native left some money on the table, as Jalen Brunson did for the Knicks, the Cavaliers could have been in better shape to bolster the roster.

Donovan Mitchell’s extension helps Cavs, claims analyst

Among basketball fans, there’s a debate over whether the Cleveland Cavaliers did a good job re-signing Donovan Mitchell to such an expensive, long-term contract; others, such as Brian Windhorst, believe people are not aware of how this helps the team.

The long-time analyst pointed out that disregarding the entire LeBron James situation, the Cavaliers needed someone they could bank on to be their leading superstar for the next few years. With this extension, they hold on to him until he is 35.

By then, the $75 million they would have to owe the seven-time All-Star in the final year of his contract might seem excessive. But at least in the next four years, they will have someone to lead the charge, especially as others, such as James Harden, will be edging towards retirement.
