The 2025-26 campaign was a historic campaign for LeBron James. He may not have won any accolades or made a deep playoff run, but he competed in a record-breaking 23rd season in the NBA. He overtook Vince Carter last season, who played for 22 seasons.

Unlike Carter, who was more of a role player in his last few seasons, James was still able to play at a high level and led the Los Angeles Lakers to a Western Conference Semifinals finish last season.

James dropped a bombshell a couple of weeks ago when he decided to leave the Lakers and test free agency. Former NBA player Charles Barkley shared his thoughts on where the King should play next.

The only rightful farewell tour would be with the Cleveland Cavaliers… If LeBron goes to Golden State or Philadelphia it’s like he’s trying to cheat his way to a championship. He has no affiliation with neither one of those teams.

Charles Barkley is well known for never mincing his words on a public platform. He criticized James for showing interest in joining Philadelphia 76ers after they traded for Jaylen Brown from Boston Celtics in a blockbuster move.

James ended his eight-year stint with the Lakers after the 2025-26 campaign. In his 23rd season, he averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 appearances. While his stats cannot be compared to the numbers he posted in his prime, he has shown that he can still help a team compete for a championship.

James has been heavily linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 76ers, and the Golden State Warriors. But Barkley believes a move to the Cavs would be the perfect farewell for James rather than moving to Philly or Golden State.

LeBron James should end his career in Cleveland

LeBron James is already a legend in Cleveland. He was drafted by the franchise in 2003 and has taken them to five NBA Finals in his two stints there. The four-time champion delivered the city their first and only championship in 2016, which cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players to have ever played.

Barkley suggested that James should end his career in Cleveland and not anywhere else.

He should go back to Cleveland and finish his career there. He is arguably the second greatest basketball player I have ever seen in my life. He is amazing. But to chase championships in Golden State or Philly, I don’t think that would be a fitting end to his career. Going back to Cleveland where he was born, lived and had an impact on basketball, that would be a perfect way in my opinion to end his career.

It was believed that the Cavs were heavy favorites to sign James as a free agent for a while now. However, NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported that he has signed a deal elsewhere and his second homecoming to Cleveland may possibly be off.

Shannon Sharpe on Charles Barkley’s comments about LeBron James

Barkley did make a valid point that James has no affiliation to the 76ers or Warriors. James’ agent Rich Paul revealed that at this point of his career, James want to prioritize his happiness over anything else, however, a move to either club would see it as “ring chasing” to his critics.

Former NFL player Shannon Sharpe, who is a die-hard fan of James, weighed in on Barkley’s comments about James’ future.

So, let me ask you a question. If he goes to the Cavaliers, what are they going to say? He ring chasing. But here’s the thing, they could say that about Charles. He went to Houston. What was he trying to do in Houston? He linked up with Scottie Pippen and Hakeem Olajuwon. He was trying to win a ring. If he goes to Golden State, he’s ring chasing. He goes to Philly, he’s ring chasing. The team that he’s going to is because he wants to win.

Another championship for James would put him at five, one behind Michael Jordan. But as Sharpe said, any team James joins will look like he is chasing rings because he can turn most teams into title contenders even at his current age. The trade saga surrounding the 41-year-old will continue to grow as days pass by.
