Cavs in the Hunt for LeBron James, Kenny Atkinson Confirms

LeBron James has been spending quite a bit of time in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, ever since he returned from his 2016 reunion.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been moving up and down the bell curve when it comes to one of the teams that are in the lead to sign superstar free agent LeBron James.

Ever since the 41-year-old announced that he would leave the Los Angeles Lakers after eight years with them, a return home was touted as one of the most likely options.

However, conflicting reports have been coming through about the Ohio-based franchise’s chances, particularly with other teams throwing out elaborate recruiting pitches.

The Philadelphia 76ers are considered one of the favorites, particularly after the Jaylen Brown trade, and their communication, both publicly and through James’ agent, has been a talking point. There are other outliers, but even then, many would appreciate it if James went home.

Former players believe that joining the Warriors, or particularly the 76ers, will hamper James’ legacy. However, despite those opinions, it was rumored that the superstar might not sign with his home team.

It’s an exciting time for us. We’re in the mix for the greatest player of all-time… It’s exciting… I think you are nervous.

Kenny Atkinson said on SiriusXM NBA Radio

The Cavaliers’ head coach’s words indicate that his team is still in the hunt to sign the franchise’s greatest-ever player. By labeling James as the GOAT and proclaiming that ‘family is everything,’ it seems that the 59-year-old is doing his part to help convince LeBron James over his next team.

But Kenny Atkinson knows that the four-time champion will take his time and admits that he has earned the right to do so. Then, he went on to say how good Ohio is, something that sounded more like a reminder for LeBron James.

Kenny Atkinson drops more hints about LeBron James

After speaking with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Kenny Atkinson headed to the Cavs’ summer league game and was asked to speak with the commentators.

You guys know there’s a little free agency thing going on right now. That could be our real jump, and you know what I’m talking about. That’s exciting too.

Kenny Atkinson said

To the uninitiated, this could mean anything. James Harden is up for a new contract after declining his player option. Then, Donovan Mitchell just received his extension.

However, other than that, the Cavaliers have not been in the news about many major player moves or signings. Therefore, this could be another indication that the top brass are hard at work trying to recruit the biggest name out there.

Naturally, a head coach will fancy his chances of being able to coach, as he mentioned, ‘the greatest player of all time.’ But he might not be giving out so many hints if he did not know that the Cavaliers are in the driving seat to sign the four-time league MVP.

Former teammate prefers LeBron James join the young guns

Other than these and other conversations surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers, there are varying opinions on where LeBron James might end up. When NBA TV caught up with DeMarcus Cousins at the summer league games and asked him the same question, he said:

I think Bron in Minnesota with Ant-Man would be must-watch TV. They added LaMelo Ball, who’s also another exciting player. You put those three characters together, I think we in for some good ball and possibly a championship run.

DeMarcus Cousins replied

The center relayed his opinion on where he would like to see his former teammate play. Cousins believes that joining Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball at the Minnesota Timberwolves will be box office.

The two young guns are already expected to be a major draw. If LeBron James joins and moulds them into a contender, that would be, at least in Cousins’ opinion, great for basketball.
