LeBron James seems to be in no hurry on deciding his future team in the NBA. As the days pass by, James is inching closer to making a decision. As of now, three to five teams are still heavily linked to the four-time champion.
A number of teams have contacted James’ camp after he became an unrestricted free agent. While there were doubts about his future after a record-breaking 23rd season in the NBA, his agent Rich Paul hinted at James playing beyond the 2026-27 campaign.
American television personality and sports analyst, Stephen A. Smith, spoke in detail about his opinions on James’ impending free agency decision.
Here is the difference between Cleveland and Miami. From a basketball perspective, LeBron might be a better fit because he’d be more needed on the court with Miami. With Cleveland, it is more about his locker-room leadership plus his greatness on the court. There is no comparison. It has to be Cleveland. Everything points to LeBron in Cleveland in Ohio.

Stephen A. Smith has remained critical of James over the years and even had a beef with him during a Los Angeles Lakers game last year. While the two do not see each other eye-to-eye, Smith has praised James after an impressive 2025-26 campaign.
Several championship contenders have made their pitches to James over the last few days. As such, the journalist believes that the 41-year-old will likely return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time. The Cavs are open about wanting him back and remains one of the frontrunners at the moment.
With rumors heating up with every passing day, it is just a matter of a few days or weeks before James reveals his decision to the outside world. It is very likely that his next team will be the final one of his NBA career. And based on Smith’s statements, it looks like James will be in Cleveland for the upcoming season.
LeBron James is not trying to be in the Western Conference
While the New York Knicks won the championship this year, there is no doubt that the Western Conference is a lot deeper than the East. James spent the majority of his career in the East playing for the Cavs and Miami Heat for 15 years until he moved to the Lakers in 2018.
With the West looking more stacked and competitive than ever, Smith believes that James will move back to the East in the offseason.
We know you ain’t trying to be in the Western Conference. ‘Cause you know your ain’t going to win out there. If LeBron James got a deal with cold weather again, it damn sure ain’t gonna be in Minnesota. It ain’t going to happen. Let’s stop it.

Stephen A. Smith says he’s sick of this damn story where is LeBron James going next season:

“I didn’t say I was sick of him, BUT DON’T TELL ME THAT THIS BROTHER DON’T LIKE DRAMA. DON’T TELL ME HE DON’T LIKE SUSPENSE. DON’T TELL ME THAT HE AIN’T ABOUT MARKETING. IT AIN’T THAT… pic.twitter.com/4vwK4zrlRS
James has spent eight years in the Western Conference. His dominance was not the same as he had in the East. Nevertheless, he did win a championship in 2020 and reached the Western Conference Finals in 2023. However, he has not made it past the second round since.
Stephen A. Smith reveals LeBron James’ biggest issue with going back to Miami
LeBron James spent four years during his time in Miami from 2010 to 2014. During his stint there, he led them to four NBA Finals and delivered them two consecutive championships in 2012 and 2013. Since his departure in 2014, the Heat have made it to just two NBA Finals and never won the title.

While James continues to be linked to the Heat, Smith believes that there will be a big issue if the move does happen.
If LeBron James goes to Miami and helps them win in Miami, Pat Riley gets the credit. It’s Pat that went out and got Giannis and then LeBron… the champion is the executive that’s pulled it off again in his 80s.., LeBron is just the latest player he acquired to help elevate their franchise and the Pat Riley mystique. If you know anything about LeBron, he prides himself on being more than that.

Stephen A Smith says the biggest issue with LeBron going to Miami, is Pat Riley would get all the credit if they win a championship:

Pat Riley made the biggest move of the offseason by trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo. It is a power move from Riley after an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign.
Adding a player like James to a frontcourt of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo could turn the Heat into contenders in the East. However, Smith believes that the credit would go to Riley and James would not be very happy about it.
