The future looks bright for the New England Patriots. Drake Maye and AJ Brown are already on the same page.
The Patriots went through an offseason overhaul after losing in the Super Bowl. Stefon Diggs was cut, and Kayshon Boutte could be traded. Their search for a WR1 led them to AJ Brown.
Brown won a Super Bowl in 2024 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but complained that the offense had become stale. After the Eagles were knocked out in the wildcard round, Brown pressured the Eagles to trade him.
From the beginning, Brown eyed a move to the Patriots, whom he grew up supporting. Eventually, the Patriots acquired their man, and he’s already established a good rapport with quarterback Drake Maye.
[AJ Brown] been awesome. I’m looking forward to playing with him, looking forward to getting into camp and building some chemistry. I know there’s already some there for me. You’ve just got to throw it near him, and he’ll make a play. So, he’s a great teammate, he’s been great so far, and he loves to win.
Drake Maye told the media at his FlexWork Sports camp
Brown played in two Super Bowls with the Eagles. He experienced heartbreak during his first appearance. His chance for redemption came in 2024. Brown caught 67 passes for 1079 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in the regular season and 163 yards and 2 TDs in the playoffs en route to his first championship ring.

Experts expected the Eagles to make a strong push to retain their world champion title despite losing offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. In Moore’s absence, the Eagles’ offense declined. Brown’s numbers took a hit. He had just 1003 yards and 7 TDs from 78 catches.
The 49ers put the final nail in the Eagles’ coffin. Brown only had one catch the entire game. He made sure the Eagles knew that he wanted to leave and become a Patriot. The Eagles waited until the trade deadline on June 1 to strike a deal.
According to multiple reports, the Patriots sent a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for Brown.
AJ Brown praises Drake Maye
Maye’s rookie year was underwhelming, but there were signs that he could be a long-term starter for the Patriots. In year two, Mike Vrabel entered the frame as the new Patriots head coach, and Maye immediately took a giant leap.

The Patriots won the AFC East with a 14-3 record. In the playoffs, they defeated the Chargers, Texans, and Broncos to qualify for their Super Bowl appearance since 2018. Maye threw for 6 touchdowns and 700+ yards during that run. However, they could not match the Seattle Seahawks’ intensity in the final.
Drake Maye received his second Pro Bowl selection, his first All-Pro honors, and came second in the MVP voting. Maye also ranked 8th in the latest ESPN quarterback list.
When Brown was asked about his first impression of Maye, the Super Bowl winner said that the UNC alum is a “true leader.”
He’s a true leader and he leads the room. It says a lot that young guy grabs everybody’s attention. This is a leader of men I’m speaking about, and that right there is not a trait that is easily found in men. So, for him to have it so young and him to recognize what he has in front of him, it speaks volume. Like I said, the fun thing is that he can make any throw. That’s what you wanna see, and he does it very easily.

The Patriots surprised many with their performance last year. 2026 could look very different because they have drawn the sixth-toughest schedule.
