Football fans were caught off guard after ESPN fired Ryan Clark on Monday. Fans will no longer see Clark on either First Take or NFL Live.

Clark joined ESPN in 2015. He worked his way up from operating the telestrator on Scott Van Pelt‘s late-night SportsCenter to hosting NFL Live and appearing regularly on Monday Night Countdown, First Take, and Get Up.

Clark survived the Network’s last big layoff drive. However, he is gone now. According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, he was fired while filming the latest episode of NFL Live.

Usually, staff receive a notification from the company before they are fired. So, why did ESPN fire Ryan Clark when he was filming for a show? According to Marchand, Clark was supposed to get the news like all the others, but the company wanted to avoid any leak.

Sources at ESPN say the reason it told Clark during the show was due to media inquiries into his departure and a fear that the news would leak out before they could inform him. Since after the Super Bowl in February, sources had told The Athletic that Clark’s job could be in jeopardy. Last week, The Athletic learned that Clark was likely to be let go.

Marchand wrote

The timing of Clark’s firing is awkward. The training camp season is right around the corner. Clark’s expertise could have come in handy, but they now have to look for a replacement.

Ryan Clark delivered a bold take about the Dallas Cowboys before he was fired

Clark did not know that he would be fired on Monday. So, like always, he went to the studio to film an episode of NFL Live. ESPN posted multiple clips of Clark during the afternoon.

One of the clips contained Clark claiming that the Dallas Cowboys are legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

They are realistic this year. You go and get [new defensive coordinator] Christian Parker from the Philadelphia Eagles. He understands how to keep the top on the defense and not give up the big play.

Clark, a former DB, noted that Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown could have a breakout campaign. Overshown missed several games due to injury. But before spending time on IR, Overshown accumulated 118 tackles and 5 sacks.

You’re expecting someone like [third-year linebacker] Demarion Overshown to be exactly what we saw him ascending to be before the injury. We watched him play a little bit last year, and I expect him to be an X-factor in what they want to be.

Clark also showed support for rookie first-round safety Caleb Downs. He argued that the Cowboys have the freedom to play the former Ohio State man in various positions.

However, the heart of the Cowboys, Clark noted, is the offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott, WR1s CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, and running back Javonte Williams.

If [coach Brian Schottenheimer] can get those guys going, this could be a team we’re talking about at the end of the season and not just the beginning.

Fans may not get to see Clark on mainstream media, but they can still hear him on The Pivot Podcast, which he hosts alongside former NFL players Channing Cowder and Fred Taylor.

Ryan Clark, an LSU graduate, went undrafted in 2002 and bounced around from the Giants to the Commanders roster before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent eight years with the AFC North franchise and won a Super Bowl ring in 2008. Clark played 208 games, recorded 938 combined tackles, 19 tackles for loss, and 55 passes defensed.
