NASCAR has finally given into the demands from the fans and has decided to extended the practice session for 2027 season and beyond. The two groups 25 mins format has been scrapped for a 50 mins session where all cars allowed to be on the track and can use two sets of tires. Not everyone in the community had positive reaction to the change.

Team Penske Racing three times Cup Series champion Joey Logano has shared his thoughts change on his latest appearance on the Door Bumper Clear podcast. He pointed out that though he understands why the session was extended, he would’ve been okay with the whole session being dropped.

Yeah. I’m okay with no practice. You know, I mean, I know we just added more practice, but I’m okay with it. I enjoy practice. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy working on the car and like trying to find ways to be better and as conversations and all, like, it’s a lot of fun.

Joey Logano said.

The No:22 driver has a valid reason for arguing against the extended session. Joey Logano highlighted how when the cars have issues, racing on the track tends to become much more entertaining than expected compares to times when team identify issues during practice. He highlighted how the races during COVID were entertaining with no practice sessions.

Like I enjoy testing for that reason, but sometimes when cars are all screwed up, the racing’s really good…I mean, COVID racing was pretty good. You know, we just show and go. The cars in the first run of the race were all over. Cars were passing left and right.

Joey Logano breaks silence on new Daytona rule package

In the same conversation, the champion driver also talked about the new Superspeedway package. Starting from 2026 Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, the spoiler will be shortened from 7inch to 5inches, while the horsepower will be reduced from 510 to 465. Logano feels the race is going to be more like the events at Daytona pre-repave era.

I’m sure it’ll look a little bit more like the old Daytona from years and years ago before they repaved it. I don’t know if it’ll go that extreme or not, and what it’ll look like, but yeah, there’s a lot of unknowns.

Joey Logano said.

Further talking about the update that would make the cars 3mph faster than usual he highlighted how the limited practice session this time will challenge them as they will not have enough time to adjust with the changes. It would have been better for drivers if the change was introduced the race week at Atalanta Motor Speedway.

And how you set the car up and all those things too, on top of it is what are you going to need? It goes back to Atlanta where you sit there, and you go, do you want downforce or do you want to drag out? What’s going to matter the most? Well, Atlanta, we’ve been there enough times to at least have a general idea of what we think will be important. Well, I don’t know about Daytona.

Joey Logano added.

The comments from the three times Cup champion are on point and shows how the new rule packages are often pretty challenging for the drivers. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the Coke Zero 400, the last race of the regular season.
