The New York Mets have once again struggled this year. As the team continues to spiral downward, there has been speculation that the team could trade away superstar Francisco Lindor. On Friday, GM David Stearns declined to rule out a potential trade of him.

Last week, reports emerged that the Mets were ready to be sellers. According to Chelsea Janes, the team informed the other teams that apart from Juan Soto, Nolan McLean, Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, and Christian Scott, every other player was available for trade.

This led to speculation that Lindor could be on his way out. The 5-time All-Star has struggled during a season that has been filled with injuries. He has appeared in just 47 of the 104 games of the Mets.

On Friday, the National League East side welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers for a 3-game series. Before the game, David Stearns spoke to the reporters.

During the press conference, Stearns was asked whether he would rule out trading away Lindor. The team’s President of Baseball Operations expressed that he was not going to rule out anything. He then claimed that the team had some players who were potential future Hall of Famers.

I’m not going to rule out or in any specific player on anything. … What I will say is, we’ve got a group of young players and we’ve got some potential Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers, that we view as our core.

David Stearns told the reporters

While the team is open to listening to offers for Lindor, actually trading him will be a bit difficult. He is currently in the 5th year of his 10-year, $341 million contract extension. On Friday, he went 0-for-4 against the Dodgers.

David Stearns admitted that he was extremely disappointed with the Mets’ position this season

After missing the playoffs last season, the New York Mets hoped this would be the year where they bounced back. Things have, however, not gone the way they anticipated. In his conversation with the reporters, David Stearns admitted that he was extremely disappointed with the current position of the team.

The Mets finished the 1st half of the season with a 40-57 record. In the final series, they were swept in the 3-game set by the Boston Red Sox,

They began the 2nd half with a series win against the Philadelphia Phillies. After that, they suffered another series loss, this time against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Friday saw them lose 4-2 against the Dodgers. With that defeat, the team was left with a 43-61 record, 18 games behind .500.

The team, which was seen as a title contender before the 2025 season, now faces the possibility of missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

This season didn’t go as we anticipated. … I’m extremely disappointed that we are in this situation.

David Stearns told the reporters

Almost a month ago, the team fired manager Carlos Mendoza. After they got swept by the Chicago Cubs, the team relieved him of his duties and appointed Andy Green as the interim manager until the end of the season.

In 23 games under his charge, the team has gone 9-14. To make matters even worse for them, Juan Soto was removed from the game against the Dodgers following left calf soreness.

Just for context, they are 12 games behind the final Wild Card place. So unless something magical happens and they go on a huge winning run and the others go on a slump, they will be missing the playoffs once again.

So what is next for them? If they are sellers, who will they get in return and whom will they trade away? All of these big questions will be answered in due time.
