While people should be empathetic toward the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan as he survived a terrible vehicle accident, a few in the media have started criticizing the delay in broadcasting the news. Among them is leading 49ers content creator and analyst Tony Farmer, who noticed some discrepancies that he quickly posted on Twitter.

Farmer noted that the accident happened on July 14. But the police records indicate that the incident wasn’t logged in until July 22—nearly eight days after.

The police log containing Kyle Shanahan’s July 14 accident didn’t mention it on July 14. It also didn’t mention it July 15, 16 17, 18, 19, 20, or 21. It didn’t appear in the public record until July 22.

Farmer also provided a link to the police website for his followers to see for themselves.

Dontay Atkinson, another 49ers analyst, argued that this was nothing out of the ordinary for a run-of-the-mill accident case, unless there are criminal elements involved.

It depends on what that’s logging. If this is simply the log of when the report is actually submitted and approved, that’s not unusual for traffic incidents. Critical incidents and major crimes get processed very quickly, because there are in-custody, arraignment issues, or require detective follow-up. Non-critical incidents very often are not processed through for a week, two weeks or even more.

Atkinson wrote in the comments section of Farmer’s Twitter post

Farmer quickly replied that they will learn more once the police release the final report.

I think we will Learn more when the accident report comes out. Any passengers? Which vehicle was at fault, maybe even quotes from witnesses or those involved? Who were the officers on scene?

According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Kyle Shanahan suffered broken ribs, a broken hand, several bruises and stitches in his face during an accident that occurred on July 14. He was admitted to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Tony Farmer called out Adam Schefter in the Kyle Shanahan accident scenario

Adam Schefter was the first to verify the news of Shanahan’s accident just one minute after the Niners posted the update on Twitter. And just a minute later, there was an entire article explaining the gist of the story.

Farmer questioned the unison of the reporting by ESPN.

Adam Schefter posted the Kyle Shanahan story exactly 1 minute after the 49ers. It’s possible Schefter sat on the and made an agreement with the 49ers to let them break the story on their timeline and give him a heads up so he can be the first to piggyback it. I’m speculating, but this is one of the ways insiders earn brownie points with teams so they can keep getting info.

Farmer tweeted

Farmer wasn’t the only one to raise the same red flag. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio expressed the same suspicion in his article. Florio speculated that the Niners wanted to keep Shanahan’s accident a secret from the world.

The 49ers posted their statement regarding the accident at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Adam Schefter of ESPN posted his first tweet on the situation exactly one minute later, at 12:01 p.m. ET. The ESPN article about the accident was published at 12:02 p.m. ET.

Florio wrote

After seeing Florio arrive at a similar conclusion, Farmer linked the Shanahan case to the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal. Farmer has been one of the primary voices behind the scandal that shocked the football world earlier in the year. With mainstream media ignoring the story, Farmer and a few others have made it their life’s mission to get a proper answer.

Vrabel has remained the head coach of the New England Patriots, while Shanahan has received permission to attend the 49ers’ training camp.
