Despite the tumultuous offseason, Mike Vrabel’s position as the New England Patriots head coach is safe. Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots, has great faith in Vrabel’s abilities as a coach.
The New York Post’s expose on Vrabel’s extra-marital affair with The Athletic’s NFL insider, Dianna Russini, sent shockwaves throughout the country. While Russini resigned and disappeared from the public eye, Vrabel has continued coaching the Patriots.
And the Patriots will not alter the status quo because Vrabel has proven that he’s capable of delivering winning seasons.
We’re privileged to have Mike [Vrabel] as our head coach… he has great intellectual knowledge about football, all the technical skills. He relates to the players beautifully. And he’s someone I have a strong belief and faith in. And I hope he’s going to be our head coach for many years to come.

In April, the Post published a piece that contained compromising photographs of Vrabel and Russini. The Athletic, the sports wing of The New York Times, suspended and launched an investigation against Russini.
Question (via @shaepeppler on @FirstTake): Since we last saw the Patriots in the Super Bowl, it’s been a bit of a tumultuous offseason for your head coach, Mike Vrabel. What’s it been like navigating that in the offseason?

Russini left the NYT after more photographs surfaced. TMZ also recovered a video clip of Vrabel and Russini spending time at a boat club in Tennessee. Despite the abundance of evidence, the Patriots sided with Vrabel. The veteran coach, who won multiple rings as a player with the AFC club, carried on his duties.
In June, the NYT published the results of the investigation. It revealed that Russini routinely misused her status as a journalist and her connections to escape from sticky situations. Russini has yet to put out a statement.
Why is Mike Vrabel still the Patriots head coach?
Even after all that transpired in the offseason, Vrabel has remained the Patriots coach, and unless something major happens before week one of football, he will not be ousted by the front office. The major reason the Pats have avoided parting ways with Vrabel is that in his first season in New England, he led the team to the Super Bowl.

The Patriots had been on a downward trajectory ever since Tom Brady’s departure from the team. And after legendary coach Bill Belichick left, the Patriots needed someone capable enough to make them competitive again. Kraft turned to Vrabel, who shined in his first job as head honcho of the Titans.
Vrabel signed a multi-year deal. The Patriots finished 14-3 in the regular season. It ended the Buffalo Bills’ dominance in the AFC East for the time being. In the first knockout game, the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by a divisional round victory over the Houston Texans.
The Pats squared off against the Denver Broncos for conference supremacy. A Bo Nix-less Broncos lost 10-7, and the Patriots advanced to their first Super Bowl since 2018. In the final, they went up against the NFC champions, the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle won the game 29-13.
Despite the disappointing end to their campaign, AP voters picked Vrabel as the coach of the year ahead of Seattle’s Mike Macdonald. Maye finished runners-up in the NFL MVP race.
So, it makes sense for the Patriots to keep hold of Vrabel and try to win their seventh championship in franchise history. It will not be easy. According to the NFL, the Patriots will play the sixth-toughest schedule in 2026.
