Of all the teams that LeBron James could join in this free agency period, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Philadelphia 76ers presented the best roster, at least on paper, for the superstar to win more championships.
They had two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, a rising superstar in VJ Edgecombe, former league MVP Joel Embiid, 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, and a decent supporting cast to boot.
When adding the King’s playmaking to the mix, no suitor could offer a better roster than the Sixers. That is why he openly claimed during his announcement that he, too, felt that this team gives him the best chance of winning championships.
Sure, to get to the promised land, the team has to go through some growing pains. But despite that potentially small obstacle, there is no doubt that this team has the best chance of helping James try to match the great Kobe Bryant, and possibly Michael Jordan.
Comparisons to His Airness have been both a blessing and a curse for the Akron native. Even if he cannot match Jordan’s six rings, winning four titles with four different teams as one of the leading superstars will be a claim nobody will be able to take away from him.
After amassing all the accolades he could think of, this was the last step to establishing himself as the greatest of all time. But in this day and age, with everyone having access to every aspect on social media, LeBron James‘ legacy could also be destroyed for good if this experiment fails.
LeBron James cannot lose with a team as good as the 76ers
While being on the best team is a great thing to have, for LeBron James, it could work in the opposite direction, especially when it comes to his legacy. It so happens that since he is the most famous name in the sports world, he also receives more hate than anyone else.

Those constant criticisms kept flowing as he took his time to decide. They continued after he selected the 76ers as his final stop in his journey. Since this has been the norm every moment he continues to play, there will be no dearth of critics in case this team starts to lose.
Jaylen Brown has his fair share of detractors, and so does Joel Embiid. But there should be no surprise if fans, analysts, and jealous former players find themselves blaming the four-time champion for this mess.
They would happily create narratives to paint LeBron James as the root cause of all the Sixers’ problems. Therefore, the least the superstar and his team can do is ensure they do not lose games in the manner his Lakers did last season. Do that, and the stories will start writing even before the season concludes.
LeBron James will not be able to use health as an excuse
When LeBron James sat out with sciatica, or when it was revealed that he struggled with a knee injury during the 2025 playoffs, fans and many in the media made it clear that they were not buying it.

The only time they kept quiet was when the 22-time All-Star led the Lakers to an impressive first-round win last postseason. Therefore, if he gets injured or his body starts to break down, rest assured, James will not get the empathy, sympathy, or anypathy from any of his critics.
They will be there to call out the 6’9″ superstar for seemingly ignoring his age and continuing to play. Sure, he is better conditioned than many players half his age.
But if injuries become the reason, those naysayers will be there to remind LeBron James that he had stated he would not betray the game and continue playing if his body was not up to the mark.
It will be the classic case of using his own words against him, and then painting him as someone who thought too much of himself. Then they will compare the former No. 1 overall pick to past greats who left the game before it became too much, and then suggest that greatness knows when to stop.
LeBron James cannot resort to criticizing his teammates or the organization again
When LeBron James was with the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the major criticisms of him was that he would shift the blame to others when the going got tough.

It may not be completely true, because the end result kind of supports the view that the person who was blamed was not that good enough. But he cannot do that with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The team has technically five All-Stars, including the 23-year veteran. Therefore, teammates are out of the question when it comes to blaming someone. When it comes to the coaches, Nick Nurse is a championship-winning coach and has pushed teams continuously to the playoffs. Therefore, that is also off the charts.
Finally, the front office features Bob Myers sitting at the top, an executive who is heralded as one of the best in recent memory. Sitting below him is Mike Gansey, who happens to be LeBron James’ former high school rival and friend. Then there is Jameer Nelson, whom the superstar respects.
This means that the four-time league MVP just cannot blame anyone if things do work. The question everyone will ask him is whether his 24 years of experience failed him at the last hurdle, and whether James believes everything else is wrong except him? With the 76ers, the oldest player in the league simply cannot have an excuse to lose.
The goal should be to win two championships before retiring to match Michael Jordan. One less is still acceptable, considering it is very hard to defend titles in this 2nd Apron era. But not winning one will be a colossal failure, and that could permanently damage James’ legacy for good.
