LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers has gotten everyone in the NBA world talking. The King called time on his eight-year spell with the Los Angeles Lakers after the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign, after impressing everyone with his performances in the postseason.
The move to the 76ers was a surprise to many as he did not share any prior history with the franchise. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat were seen as the frontrunners to acquire him till he signed with their conference rivals.
While there have been a number of high-profile moves so far in the offseason, the biggest one has been James. Hence, American television sportscaster and radio host Rich Eisen suggested the NBA have the 76ers take on the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on opening day of the 2026-27 campaign.
You must put the Sixers in Madison Square Garden, on opening night, as they raise the banner. LeBron’s in there. Let’s go! You have to do that.

The Knicks are the hottest team in the NBA right now after lifting their first championship in 53 years. They share an intense rivalry with the 76ers, so much so that Knicks fans are well known for taking over the Xfinity Mobile Arena when the two sides face off in the playoffs.
The suggestion made by Rich Eisen does make a lot of sense. Knicks have a huge fanbase, while James is still the face of the league and still has a big impact on NBA scheduling. The defending champions taking on James and the 76ers on the opening night will be must-watch TV.
LeBron James taking on the Knicks at MSG would be a dream NBA opening night matchup
It was reported that the Knicks were one of the teams interested in signing James. It was not the first time they tried to pursue the four-time champion. Unfortunately, the hopes of seeing James in a Knicks jersey ended after they won the championship.
While there is no doubt that James would be a valuable addition to any team in the league, him joining the Knicks would not be a good look in terms of legacy. Hence, any Knicks fans dreaming of seeing James play for them are never going to happen after he confirmed that this would be his final decision.
The Knicks and 76ers share an intense Atlantic Division rivalry. The two sides clashed in the Eastern Conference Semifinals this year. However, the 76ers were clean-swept by the eventual champions as they struggled to put up any fight.
An opening-night clash between the two rivals promises to be a mouthwatering clash if it happens. Adding a player like James into the mix alongside the other stars certainly ups the ante for both sides. Both teams are already the heavy favorites to get out of the Eastern Conference next season.
LeBron James’ career is arguably the greatest story in sports history
No player has entered the NBA with the level of hype and expectations LeBron James had on his shoulders. He was drafted by the Cavs as the number one pick straight out of high school in 2003, and the rest is history. Not only did the 41-year-old live up to the expectations, but he also surpassed them and continues to carry the league to date.

Former MVP and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley called James’ career “the greatest story in sports history.”
What LeBron has accomplished is arguably the greatest story in sports history. LeBron is the only player in my 40 years in the NBA who played great from Day 1. For him to turn into one of the best players ever. For him to be as great as he’s been from the year 18 to where he’s at now, I think it’s one of the great stories in sports history.

James has not only met the expectations, but he has also surpassed them. But he is not done yet. If he manages to lift his fifth championship and his first with the 76ers next year, he will become the first player in league history to win a title with four different franchises.
