Courtney Williams Details ‘Friendly’ Trash-Talking Battle with Caitlin Clark: “I Can’t Wear Your Shoes Against You”

Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever enjoyed their best month to date, winning eight of their ten games either side of the All-Star break. Now, she was going to face close friend Courtney Williams and her No. 1-seeded Minnesota Lynx in their house.
The away team was on a five-game winning streak where their point guard, fellow backcourt mate Kelsey Mitchell, and center Aliyah Boston proved that their chemistry was right on point.
That gave an indication of how the Fever were going to attack this game, knowing their opponents are the most rounded team in the league. But that was going to be a tall ask for just three players to take on the league leaders.
Caitlin Clark and Boston struggled to get going both from distance and inside the arc. Mitchell did her part, scoring a game-high 37 points. But it does not help when the trio was the only players in double digits.
One of the ways the Iowa native tries to get the upper hand is by trash-talking. But that also did not work, as Williams detailed when asked about the Fever guard’s attempts to disrupt the Lynx.
I’m crying, that’s my girl though, K Mitch my girl too. They’re just great players, man. You know it don’t be like no negative trash talk. It’s all just fun and games… She asked me why I didn’t wear her shoes, and I was like, “Come on girl, I can’t wear your shoes against you.”

The veteran guard was laughing and also left teammate Olivia Miles and the reporters in splits with that answer. Everyone is aware of Williams and Clark’s budding friendship. But she was not going to wear the latter’s signature shoes against her.
Caitlin Clark set another record in this game
In her last game, Clark notched her fourth triple-double. In this game, she was non-existent on the glass, but made sure she was feeding her teammates once she realized her shot was not falling.
The 24-year-old ended the game with 19 points and 10 assists. That helped her push her five-game average to 29+ points and 9+ assists. There have been plenty of instances where players have been able to record either of those numbers.
But to do both of them at the same time was something that has never happened before. The Hawkeyes’ great might not be considered an MVP candidate so far. Now those consistent numbers might be able to change the narrative.
Within a 5-game span in a single season in WNBA History…

🏀 There have been 226 spans of 9.0 APG

She may be second in assists per game and third overall in total passes leading to scores, but Clark has played fewer games than either of the players in front of her. If the three-time All-Star keeps up this pace, it will be a matter of time before she reclaims her throne as the assist queen of the WNBA.
Fever being overreliant on their big 3 is a problem, says analyst
When a team’s top players contribute at such a level, and on a nightly basis, it tends to help them win games. But after the Minnesota Lynx upstaged the Indiana Fever, ESPN’s Andraya Carter pointed out a worrying trend.

A similarity between Indiana and the Aces is how much pressure is on their Big 3 to score. A’ja Wilson had 35+ points against Chicago, they lost. Kelsey Mitchell had 35+ points in this game, and they still lose. So much pressure on those three players for those two teams to be productive. That’s something to keep an eye on.
Carter said on WNBA Countdown
"This could look like a semifinals matchup potentially." 👀

The analyst believes that teams over-depending on their Big 3 have lost games, and that is a worrying sign for her. Carter is trying to suggest that even though that method may win games against lesser teams, it becomes difficult against other top playoff contenders.
