George Lombard Jr. stole the show on Tuesday night. In his MLB debut for the New York Yankees, the rookie shortstop smashed a solo home run for his first career hit and showcased his defensive capabilities with an electric play that sent the fans on social media into a frenzy.

Following their 13-7 loss on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Bronx Bombers announced some roster changes. Shortstop Anthony Volpe, outfielder Jasson Dominguez, and relief pitcher Angel Chivilli were optioned to Triple-A while Lombard Jr. was promoted to the major leagues.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Lombard Jr. put up a highlight-reel defensive play. He swiftly picked up the ball and turned it into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. This play received a huge roar from the crowd at Yankee Stadium.

It was in the bottom of the 5th inning that he collected his first MLB hit. It was no ordinary hit as he smashed a solo home run off Hunter Dobbins in the left-center field.

The 21-year-old finished the day going 1-for-2 with a walk and a home run as the Yankees won 2-0. He became the youngest shortstop to start for the Yankees since Derek Jeter on June 11, 1995.

He also became the 14th Yankees star to hit a home run in his MLB debut. The last player to do this was Jasson Dominguez, who crushed a 2-run shot off Justin Verlander against the Houston Astros in September 2023.

Lombard Jr. was drafted 26th overall in the 2023 draft and was labeled as one of the top prospects of the Yankees this year. In the minor leagues, he had a .284/.411/.498 slash line with 12 home runs and 33 RBIs.

When Lombard Jr. stepped up to bat in the 5th inning, the Yankees were leading 1-0. While they were in front, the game was still tight, and after what happened on Monday, the pressure was on his shoulders as several spectators looked on.

He was able to keep himself composed despite falling down 0-2 on the pitch count. He smashed an 81.3 MPH sweeper into the left-center field and put the Yankees up 2- 0.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, he acknowledged the tightness of the game and later claimed that this home run was something he would never forget.

It was really cool. Like I said, being a close game and it was a big run. It was a moment, a swing, a day I won’t forget forever.

To make it even sweeter, his younger brother Jacob also homered in his first professional game on Monday. He hit a home run for Single-A Jupiter, the affiliate of the Miami Marlins. So it indeed was a day that Lombard Jr. and his family will never forget.
