Todd Monken could not start his tenure as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns well after losing their preseason battle against the Chicago Bears. At a time when he still has to decide on several starting positions, his job keeps getting harder every day.

Had there been a clear indication as to who would line up, particularly on offense, the 60-year-old would have been at ease. Instead, every day he has to use another chance to get the unit ready to score some points.

The Buffalo Bills are set to arrive for their Saturday clash against the home team. With a chance to measure their improvements against another perennial playoff contender, Monken was hoping Tuesday’s practice would give him some ideas.

But that did not happen after Todd Monken called off practice after just 15 minutes. Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot was on site to witness what went wrong, which she detailed on YouTube.

Todd Monken got very angry at the end of practice and cut it short. He saw some things from defenders that he did not like at all, and that was enough from him. He brought everyone in for a little bit of a tongue-lashing.

The reporter pointed out how three incidents led to this. The first was when a defender hit Shedeur Sanders, forcing the QB to go to the sideline, something no coach wants to see. Soon, Quinshon Judkins joined him after taking a hit.

A while later, trade acquisition Jared Verse was seen pulling off Judkins’ guardian cap. These instances led Todd Monken to realize that the defense was on edge, and he gave them a fiery message while also ending practice.

Journalist believes Todd Monken ending practice early has a silver lining

Losing almost a day of practice is not what a team this close to the regular season and with a myriad of schemes to perfect wants. However, Mary Kay Cabot believes that shutting down practice and giving his players an earful was maybe the best thing to happen for Todd Monken.

I think it’s actually perfect timing that something like this happened. They need to establish right here and now that this practice on Thursday is not gonna be marred by a ton of fighting. That’s not productive for anybody.

Kay Cabot added

The reporter believes that such an obstacle this early in the season can be nothing but good news. Now, after getting that tongue-lashing session, the players might finally start to understand what their coach expects from them.

Usually, teams go through some adversity, which tends to motivate them to do better. The Browns have been losing more than anyone can clearly remember. Those pent-up tensions boiling over into this, where teammates are fighting amongst themselves, are a sign that they want to end this now. Just that it should not come at the expense of injuries.

Deshaun Watson firmly in the lead over Shedeur Sanders in QB1 race

Shedeur Sanders visiting the sideline will send alarm bells amongst his fans. However, his season has not gone his way so far, as was evident from the disastrous preseason opener.

Todd Monken has already lost his cool once before when both the sophomore QB and Deshaun Watson struggled in practice. But after that loss against the Bears, it seems the coach’s focus has shifted towards the latter.

Deshaun Watson continues to work with the starters in the padded practices in Browns training camp.

Kay Cabot revealed

This means that it will be a tough situation for Sanders to win back the starting job. Their next two preseason games and all the remaining practice sessions will allow him to do so. But getting it done is another matter.
