LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers are seen as the biggest contenders to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference next season. The 76ers are coming off an impressive summer after acquiring two superstar-caliber players.
However, the Knicks are still seen as the favorites in betting odds after lifting their first championship in 53 years last season. They have retained their core players – Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart for the upcoming campaign.
James is coming off an impressive 23rd season. He has committed for the next two years and will be playing his 24th and 25th seasons in Philly.
In an interview on Yahoo Sports Daily, Hart was asked what his reaction was after James’ move to a rival team.
It fits them very well in terms of [LeBron’s] style of play. It adds more complexity to their roster. They’ve gotten better and have had a great summer.

James’ move to Philly was one of the two blockbuster moves for the franchise in the offseason. Prior to signing the four-time champion in free agency, they traded for Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Both players arrive in Philly with championship DNA.
With Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey still on the team, they probably have the most dominant starting five as presently constructed. Hence, Josh Hart believes that their recent additions add complexity to their team and they will be a lot harder to defend next season.
Josh Hart sends a strong message to LeBron James and the 76ers before ring night
Following James’ move to Philly, there were expectations that they would face the Knicks on Opening Night. Their wish was granted when they were paired against each other after the NBA released the schedule for the 2026-27 campaign. Hart was left unsurprised when the schedule was out.
Speaking about their opening-night matchup, Hart had a message for the 76ers.
I would love for it to be a Ring Night-esque of Boston the other two years ago when we played them on Ring Night and they just beat the hell out of us. I would love to do that in that game.

The matchup between the Knicks and 76ers could preview next year’s Eastern Conference Finals. Opening night will also be the night when they hang the championship banner and receive their rings at Madison Square Garden.
Hart recalled taking on the Celtics on opening night of the 2024-25 season. The Celtics had their ring ceremony and dismantled the Knicks that day. The Knicks forward is hoping that his team could do the same to LeBron James and his men on October 20.
Josh Hart expects the MSG to be electric against the 76ers on opening night
The Madison Square Garden is one of the most electric arenas. The Knicks have one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in the NBA, and there is no doubt that the MSG will be buzzing louder than ever on opening night.

After being handed a tough opening night game, Hart expects the MSG to reflect the stakes.
It would be fun. The energy would be electric. Obviously, getting our rings would be super cool. Obviously, [it’s] a new opponent who we’ve had several playoff battles with the last couple of years and them getting better with adding Jaylen and Bron. So it’s going to be fun.

The Knicks lost just one home game during the playoffs last season. It was in Game 2 against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. They have been unbeaten at the MSG in their last eight games since. Meanwhile, the 76ers will be looking to get some revenge after getting clean swept by the Knicks in the second round last season.
