The Rivalry Series between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox produced another huge moment on Sunday. A controversial no-catch call went in favor of the Yankees, leading to Dave Portnoy losing it on social media. After he had a meltdown on X, a former Red Sox star shut him down.
The incident took place in the bottom of the 5th inning when the game was scoreless. After Jose Caballero hit a single, Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up to bat.
The infielder would hit a fly ball in right field. Ceddanne Rafaela came running in and dove to collect the ball. After twisting his glove, he got up and threw the ball towards 1st base, hoping for a double play.
However, the umpires deemed it a single from Chisholm Jr. and not a catch. After a review, the decision was upheld, leading to some frustration in the Red Sox camp.

The Yankees ended up scoring 5 runs in this inning through a 2-run single from Paul Goldschmidt and a 3-run home run from Heliot Ramos. The Bronx Bombers eventually ran out as 16-1 winners and took 3 out of the 4 games from their arch-rivals.

This no-catch call became a huge trending topic on social media. The Red Sox fandom called out the officials for this call. Dave Portnoy, who is a Red Sox fan, called for the game to be protested and dropped an NSFW rant in a post on X.

Previously, a protested play in MLB occurred when a manager formally disputed an umpire’s ruling. This was reserved for situations where a rule was misinterpreted or misapplied by the officials. However, this rule was abolished starting with the 2020/2021 rule updates. This means that protesting a play is no longer permitted.
Portnoy was thus called out by fans for this. The Barstool Sports owner hit back at the Yankees fans who slammed him for his comments.
I love all these moron @Yankees fans chirping me. They are too stupid to even understand the rules of a mlb protest. This game will go back the time and situation when the protested play happened. Everything after it is null and void. So it’s 0-0 when we resume play https://t.co/WcWCido64l

Jonathan Papelbon then jumped in. The ex-Red Sox relief pitcher claimed that he hated to say but the Yankees fans were right to call him out and shut him down.
All games are final once they conclude buddy. I hate to say it but the damn Yankee fans are right!

This is not the first time Portnoy has lashed out against the MLB and the Yankees. Last year, he urged the league to ban the usage of torpedo bats after the New York side used some specially designed bats at the start of the season.
Red Sox’ Ceddanne Rafaela made his feelings known regarding no-catch with a social media post
Ceddanne Rafaela found himself in the spotlight with what he thought was a fair catch. While debates regarding this play go on, he took to his social media account to make his feelings known.

In the interview after the game, the outfielder expressed that he did not even need to watch the replays of it and stated that he did make the catch.
I didn’t even have to watch it. I know I made the catch. I know when a ball drops and a ball doesn’t drop. And I know I made the catch.
