Anthony Volpe had a night of redemption on Thursday. On his return to the New York Yankees lineup, the infielder crushed a grand slam, helping the team complete the series sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
The shortstop has faced severe criticism in the past 2 years due to his performances. His struggles with the bat and during fielding led to many urging him to be replaced.
In August, he was demoted. While calling up top prospect George Lombard Jr., the Yankees sent him down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Since then, Lombard Jr. has experienced both the highs and lows of playing in the big leagues. After an electrifying start, he did struggle a bit as well at the shortstop position and matched an unwanted franchise record with errors in 6 successive games.
On Wednesday, the Yankees placed Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list due to a right thumb sprain. Volpe was called up in his place and played at 2nd base on Thursday with Lombard Jr. playing shortstop.
The 25-year-old had an RBI single in his first at-bat back in the major leagues. His hit in the bottom of the 2nd inning extended the Yankees’ lead to 3-1. Later in the inning, he even stole 3rd base.

It was in the bottom of the 7th inning when he had his highlight moment. With his team leading 6-2 and the bases loaded, he smashed a ball into right field for a grand slam and blew the game wide open.

This was his first grand slam since hitting one against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the 2024 World Series. He ended the night going 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs.

Anthony Volpe admits he was unsure whether he would come back to the Yankees
Anthony Volpe marked his return to the New York Yankees lineup with a huge grand slam on Thursday. The New York-born star later admitted he was unsure whether he would come back to the team.

With George Lombard Jr. locking down the shortstop position, there was no other infield position available for Volpe. As Jazz Chisholm Jr. got hurt, the 2nd base spot opened up for him.
While speaking with the reporters after the game, he claimed he was trying to make the most of this opportunity.
Nothing is guaranteed. I thought I was never going to be back up here. So I’m trying to make the most of it.
Anthony Volpe told the reporters as per SNY Yankees

This grand slam was just the 2nd home run of the season for Volpe. In 57 games, he now has a batting average of .251 with 2 home runs and 24 RBIs.
Up next for the Yankees is an emotional 3-game series against their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets, at home. The game on Friday will mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, which killed 2,977 people.
