A few months ago, Jacoby Brissett nearly lost his job due to a contract standoff with the Arizona Cardinals. On Sunday, Brissett earned a much-deserved bonus for helping the Cardinals to a winning start to the 2026 NFL season.

Brissett completed 27 passes on 37 attempts for 277 yards and threw one touchdown pass to right end Trey McBride. The Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 26-14.

With that victory, Brissett reportedly earned a $285,000 bonus. According to Front Office Sports, Brissett gets $285K each time he plays at least 50% of the snaps in a win, up to 10 wins.

Brissett signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Cardinals ahead of the 2025 season. He took over after an injury ended Kyler Murray’s season.

Brissett played 12 games and posted just one win. But the veteran racked up a decent haul. He completed 315 of his 485 passes (64.9%) for 3366 yards, threw 23 touchdowns, and conceded just 8 interceptions.

In the offseason, the Cardinals sacked Jonathan Gannon and hired Mike LaFleur as their new head coach. Next, they parted ways with Murray. In the draft, they selected former Georgia and Miami signal caller Carson Beck and signed free agent QB Gardner Minshew.

Even though Brissett lost 10 games in 2025, he asked the Cardinals for a long-term extension. Brissett skipped both OTAs and the voluntary part of the offseason training session. As it was voluntary, the Cardinals did not penalize him for the absence. But his holdout extended into spring camp.

Brissett didn’t sign an extension. However, the Cardinals reworked his deal, increasing his 2026 compensation to a maximum value of $21 million with $15.5 million guaranteed. He will enter free agency in 2027.

Jacoby Brissett praises Cardinals’ rookie after a solid NFL debut

Jeremiyah Love was doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Chargers. He had suffered a high ankle sprain in the first preseason game and had limited practice leading up to Week one.

The doctors eventually cleared Love to make his NFL debut. He finished with 11 carries for 41 yards and one touchdown. Love also caught 2 passes for 9 yards. In the post-game presser, Brissett praised the rookie running back.

The touchdown was all him [Jeremiyah Love], I don’t think he was supposed to go that way… You hand him the ball, and you watch, you know? And that was my first time seeing it, like, ‘Oh, yeah, okay, yeah.’ I thought he played well in the pass game and in the run game and getting some gritty runs…I thought he did a really good job.

Arizona’s other back, Tyler Allgeier, who came from the Falcons in the summer, ended his first Cardinals outing with 17 carries for 61 yards. Last season’s top receiver Trey McBride opened his account for the year. The Pro Bowler caught 9 passes for 95 yards. ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared an interesting trivia fact about the league’s second-highest-paid tight end on Twitter.

The win over the Chargers also created major history. Cardinals reporters Cameron Cox and Kent Somers on Twitter noted that Mike LaFleur became the first “non-interim” head coach to win their first Cardinals game since Don Coryell in 1973.

The Cardinals have consecutive rivalry games in Weeks 2 and 3. First, they host the defending champions, the Seattle Seahawks, who defeated the Patriots in their opening game, followed by a trip to the Bay Area to face the San Francisco 49ers, who came away with a victory over the Rams in Australia.
