When LeBron James decided to not sign a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2025-26 campaign, the entire NBA world was on its toes. James may be at the back end of his career, but he remains the headline attraction to this day.
The King is coming off a historic 23rd season in the NBA. He not only played at a high level, but also led the Lakers to the second round of the playoffs last season. His performances in the playoffs showed that he can still play an important role in a championship team.
Despite being 41, several teams lined up to sign James in free agency. His agent, Rich Paul, revealed that 10 to 12 teams reached out to him about his future. In the end, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year deal.
Former NBA champion Dwyane Wade weighed in on James’ move to Philly over the Miami Heat.
From a basketball standpoint, I thought it is a very strategic move at this point in his career. It definitely gives him the best chance. I feel like it gives him the best chance in the East to be able to get back to compete for a championship. Miami would have been a good move as well, but a lot of moving parts in that needed to go right.

Dwyane Wade and James share a close friendship with each other. They were teammates for four years in Miami and for half a season in Cleveland. During their time in Miami, they won two championships in three NBA Finals before James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While James ended up joining the 76ers in the summer, the Heat were one of the few teams who were closely linked to him. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal, the Heat looked to sign their former star, but to no avail. However, Wade fully understands the decision and believes it was the right move from a basketball standpoint.
Dwyane Wade hints at LeBron James’ bigger plan in Philadelphia
There is no doubt that the hype and expectations surrounding the 76ers are higher than ever after the signing of James. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and James in the lineup, it is hard to argue against the 76ers being the most dominant team in the league at the moment.

But according to Dwyane Wade, there’s a lot more to James’ move to the 76ers than what most people know.
I feel like this is a little bit more, right away from the beginning, the best chance for basketball. But also too, I don’t think we’ve seen the end of what this move is. I think it’s more to this move. So, I just leave it at that.

James is well known for his business ventures and has been very successful off the court over the years. He hardly does anything by accident. While Wade’s comments are open to interpretation, he believes the move could be a precursor to something big in the future.
Stephen A. Smith thinks Victor Wembanyama has taken over LeBron James as the face of the NBA
After his move to Philly, LeBron James showed everyone that he is still the face of the league at 41. The 76ers were rewarded with the most National TV games heading into next season and have been scheduled to face the defending champions New York Knicks on Opening Night.
However, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith was asked who he thinks is the face of the NBA in an interview with VT Gen Z.
I think at this particular moment in time it’s Victor Wembanyama. I think you could still make an argument it was LeBron James. I think LeBron is still the preeminent face in the game based on his credentials, his resume, his lengthy history, but Wembanyama has definitely arrived and the Wemby era is definitely here.

There is no doubt that Wembanyama has announced himself to the NBA world after his performances last season. In just his third season, he led the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals.
While they were beaten by the Knicks in five games, Wembanyama has turned the Spurs into legitimate title contenders next season. It will be fascinating to see Wembanyama and LeBron James go head-to-head in the NBA Finals next year.
