Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy weren’t on the same page during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Thursday Night rivalry game against the Cleveland Browns. Cameras caught Rodgers and McCarthy arguing with each other on several occasions.
Historically, the Steelers have won more against the Browns, but the Pittsburgh team hadn’t won a divisional away game on Thursday night in nine previous attempts. The Steelers started as 3.5-point favorites at kickoff, but a bland first ten minutes frustrated the Steelers bench.
The microphone mounted on the Spidercam caught an exchange between the Steelers veteran quarterback and head coach that set the tone for the rest of the evening. Rodgers shouted curse words at McCarthy for delaying the play call, and McCarthy retaliated in the same fashion.

The Steelers scored the first touchdown when Roman Wilson converted at the end of a 73-yard drive. However, in the following Steelers drive, Rodgers threw an interception under duress. The momentum swung in the home team’s favor. They scored three unanswered touchdowns, and Steelers kicker Chris Boswell missed a field goal.
The offensive line performed poorly. The Browns’ pass rush landed multiple hits on Rodgers and sacked him a couple of times. Moreover, the wide receivers struggled to create separation, making it difficult for Rodgers to attempt deep passes. When he returned to the dugout, he gave them a piece of his mind.

Mike McCarthy addressed the heated exchange with Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers and McCarthy have known each other since their Green Bay Packers days. Together, they won a Super Bowl in 2011 by defeating the Steelers.

The Steelers hired McCarthy after Mike Tomlin stepped down earlier in the year. McCarthy convinced Rodgers—with a little help from his wife—to return to the Steelers for another year.
They won two games against Atlanta and Cincinnati but lost to New England, going 2-1 ahead of the big TNF game in Cleveland.
The Steelers were a mess in the first half, and Rodgers didn’t enjoy any of it. He let McCarthy hear it on the field. After the game, McCarthy admitted that he and Rodgers exchanged a few heated words, but it’s all part of the game.
Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words. Everybody’s competing on the field. I think what’s said on the field- the way I grew up in this game, it stays on the field, but that’s not the case today… But it ain’t negative communication. In my part, I wish I wouldn’t use those words.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Steelers—mostly. Rodgers and big tight end Darnell Washington connected for a 21-yard touchdown.
Just after the two-minute mark, the Steelers cut the lead to just two points when the four-time MVP threw a touchdown pass to his other TE, Pat Freiermuth. Rodgers rushed to convert on the two-point try to tie the game with barely seconds left.
However, the Browns, who had led since midway point in the second quarter, snuck in a field goal to secure a memorable victory. Kicker Andre Szmyt, who was flawless on three-point tries and had buried a field goal earlier in the game, buried a 56-yarder to take the lead once more.
There was still time for the Steelers to force overtime or maybe even win it. However, Rodgers’ pseudo-Hail Mary pass was intercepted by Browns DB Grant Delpit. The Browns won 27-24 and improved to 3-1, while the Steelers are 2-2.
Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 40 passes for 299 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He took 5 sacks and finished with a passer rating of 83.2 to complete the game.
