Brian Schottenheimer Owns Cowboys’ Shocking Loss to Ravens: “I Didn’t Do Very Good in The Last 28 Seconds”

The Dallas Cowboys were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders this season after the way owner Jerry Jones added piece after piece this offseason. But head coach Brian Schottenheimer is facing the music after his team is 1-2 after three games.
Their season-opening loss to the New York Giants was more about the team’s inability to follow discipline than any major performance issues. The head coach owned up to that and made it clear that his players also had to do that.
In Week 2, that discipline returned as the Cowboys steamrolled the Washington Commanders after Jayden Daniels left early with another dislocated elbow.
After that impressive win, the team continued their elite performances for the most part in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro. That was at least until the Cowboys’ opponents took the lead with a minute and a half remaining in the game.
That last drive ended with a field goal, and the Ravens used the final seven seconds to drive down the field and kick the winning field goal. After fumbling that chance, here is Brian Schottenheimer going over what could have been their second win of the season.
I didn’t do very good in the last 28 seconds… I felt like I overcoached Dak on 3rd down… I’ll take accountability for it… I hurt our chances to win that game. I’ll be better. And I’m better than that. I’m better than I performed in the last 28 seconds.

He admitted that ‘overcoaching’ Dak Prescott affected the QB on the crucial 3rd and goal throw to George Pickens. That impacted Schotty’s decision to go with a field goal on the ensuing fourth down.
Brian Schottenheimer admits coaching mistake on final kickoff that handed Ravens advantage
While Brian Schottenheimer admits that his third-and-goal play call affected their field goal, the Cowboys could still affect how the Baltimore Ravens received the next kickoff.
Kicker Brandon Aubrey booted it out of the back of the end zone, giving the Ravens the chance to start at the 35-yard line. When asked if he would do things differently, the head coach said:
It’d be a short kick where they’d have to bring it out, and then the clock would go down to a couple seconds, two or three seconds. And then they probably would have taken a knee.
Schottenheimer believes that in retrospect, he should have asked his kicker to boot a short kick that would have eaten time off the clock. That would have stopped the Ravens from trying to go for a win in regulation. It could have given the Cowboys time to regroup and take their chances in overtime.
Cowboys can return to their winning ways against struggling Texans
Such a close loss can be heartbreaking for any professional athlete. Thanks to the time available before their next battle, the Dallas Cowboys can regroup, think about what they need to improve, and chalk out plans to take advantage of their next opponent’s current form.

After three games, the struggling CJ Stroud and his Houston Texans are at the bottom of the league standings. That could be the best chance for America’s team to bounce back and even their record.
However, Schottenheimer and his players must exercise caution. Their Week 4 opponents narrowly lost to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 and to the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday.
They will be eager to stop their losing run, and that could spell trouble for the Cowboys. If the latter stick to their game plan, adapt as per the situation, and stay disciplined, the Texans’ losing run could continue.
