Patrick Mahomes looks like his old self, with Eric Bieniemy calling the offense. But a heated moment between the two raised concerns among the Kansas City Chiefs supporters.

The Chiefs returned from their bye and will face the Los Angeles Chargers next. Before that, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy spoke with reporters on various subjects, including Mahomes outburst on the sidelines at Allegiant Stadium. He said via Sports Radio 810 WHB:

I have no problems with guys venting their frustrations, because I want them to… That’s part of the dynamics of the relationships that we have. Sometimes you’re going to agree with things, sometimes you’re going to disagree with things. If there’s something that’s taking place out on the field, they might have a better view than what we do off the field.

What led to the heated moment between Patrick Mahomes and Eric Bieniemy

The incident took place in the second quarter when the Chiefs trailed by three points. The Raiders’ defense stopped three of Mahomes’ touchdown attempts.

First, the defense stopped Kenneth Walker from walking into the end zone and sacked Mahomes on the next play. On third-and-goal, the Raiders’ secondary batted away a pass, forcing KC to settle for a field goal. While Harrison Butker measured his runup near the goal line, cameras caught Mahomes arguing with Bieniemy in the Chiefs dugout. Bieniemy said:

I want [the players] to be comfortable sharing that stuff with me. There are no issues of communication. We’re in the arena. It’s all about survival. Sometimes you get their best, and sometimes you get their worst. I’m inviting all of that.

Eric Bieniemy sent a warning to the rest of the NFL

After defeating the Raiders for the seventh time in their own Stadium, the Chiefs are among the three undefeated teams left in the league along with the Vikings and the 49ers.

Analysts credited Bieniemy with improving the Chiefs’ offense after they went 6-11 without him last year. Walker, who won the best player award at last season’s Super Bowl, has found second gear in KC red. Walker is second in the league with 87 carries for 537 yards and 4 touchdowns in four appearances (most teams have played five).

The Chiefs rank number one in total offense (averaging 457.5 yards per game) and No. 2 in NFL power/offense rankings, per SB Nation and Yahoo Sports. Bieniemy isn’t getting carried away by the early-season success. Bieniemy said via Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports:

Have we played our best ball yet? No… All of us have something to work toward… We need to make sure our guys are working to improve and get better. Yes, we are 4-0, but we’ve still got 13-plus games left.

KC playing great football isn’t a fluke. During his first stint as OC (2018 to 2022), the Chiefs won two Super Bowls with Mahomes bagging multiple league and Super Bowl MVP honors.

Washington appointed Bieniemy as their OC for the 2023 season. In the following years, he bounced around from UCLA (college) to the Chicago Bears (running backs coach) before returning to KC as the offensive playcaller.

On Monday, the Chiefs host the 0-5 Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead. KC are 8.5-point favorites against their AFC West rivals. KC leads the series 71-60-1. Mahomes is 10-4 against the Chargers in his career. He boasts a passer rating of 98.1 with 3,717 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.
