Dan Quinn’s poor clock management cost the Washington Commanders a win. Washington settled for a tie.
On Monday, former NFL head coach Rex Ryan called Quinn and offensive coordinator David Blough out on Monday’s edition of ESPN’s Get Up. Ryan claimed to have never seen anything like it before. Ryan said:
[That was] the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. This has never happened. There’s no chance in hell this has ever happened. And it won’t happen again.
Washington had a great chance to win when the score was 27-27 in the fourth quarter. Instead of telling quarterback Jayden Daniels to throw the ball out of bounds and using up his final timeout, Washington threw an incomplete pass, forcing overtime.
After the Giants’ kicker missed a field goal, Washington only needed three points to win. Washington fumbled, and the Giants returned the favor. Washington received a second shot.
Washington needed to score within the final fifteen seconds with zero timeouts left. Quinn and Blough chose to run the ball instead of clocking it. That would have let kicker Drew Stevens attempt a 45+ yard field goal.
However, Washington lost one yard on the run. The clock ticked away before the Commanders could take the next snap. The game ended in a rare tie. Quinn was disgusted with the outcome, and so was Ryan, who didn’t mince his words:
Dan Quinn, for you not to be on the headset with the guy upstairs or wherever it may be beside you, that’s absurd. That’s your job as a head coach… I’m going to tell the truth. We’ve seen the worst clock management ever in a Super Bowl, right? He owns that one. How about we own this one too? This stuff right here gets you fired.
"The dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. … This is atrocious!" Rex Ryan still can’t believe the ending of Giants-Commanders 😭 https://t.co/u4zfxAuFvh

The ending was so bizarre even the Commanders minority owner, Magic Johnson, was in disbelief. The NBA Hall of Famer wrote:
I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants. All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!
Washington led through three quarters of football. Daniels scored one rushing touchdown and set up running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt for another. Daniels added a 26-yard rushing score four minutes into the final quarter.
They led by 14 points. However, the defense, Quinn’s specialty, gave up two touchdowns in seven minutes. Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers scored TDs on Jameis Winston’s passes.
The tie leaves the Giants on 3-1-1 and the Commanders on 1-3-1 after five weeks.
What is Dan Quinn’s record with the Washington Commanders?
Quinn became the first head coach of the Josh Harris regime. In the same year, the Commanders drafted Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels second overall.

Daniels led the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season finish. Washington finished second in the NFC East. In the wild-card round, they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Detroit Lions in the divisional playoff game.
Washington qualified for its first NFC Championship Game in three decades. However, they lost to rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, who went on to win the Super Bowl.
Daniels won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. His 822 passing yards, 135 rushing yards, 116.2 passer rating, and 69.7% completion rate were the best of any rookie quarterback in playoff history.
Quinn’s Washington went from dominating defenses to just 5 wins in 2025 after Daniels broke his hand in Week 7. The story has stayed the same this year. Daniels is 0-2-1 in three starts. Washington has won one game in five weeks. Dan Quinn is 18-20 with the Commanders. If things don’t improve, the owners could part ways with the 56-year-old.
