“Not a shock”: Lando Norris has a surprising reaction to McLaren’s porpoising issues in French GP

While McLaren Racing have been trying their best to make sure their MCL36 has a decent pace in the Circuit Paul Ricard where the fans have already started gathering for the twelfth round of this year’s Formula 1 Championship, the porpoising that their cars experienced during the Free Practice sessions worried the supporters of the British team. But on the contrary, McLaren driver Lando Norris is not at all worried about the porpoising as he believes it is a positive sign that indicates their car has improved in terms of performance and speed after the new upgrades that McLaren introduced for this weekend.

In the opinions of Lando Norris, the McLaren upgrades have generated some more downforce for the MCL36, and that is why the car has been experiencing some slight porpoising during the FP’s. The Woking-based team has disclosed a host of new upgrades now that we are almost halfway to the season finale of F1 2022. The new additions include an altered sidepod shape and new floor designs, along with some changes made to the rear wing endplate and brake ducts.

Lando Norris did take some time to adjust to the newer settings on his car which he tried out for the first time during the second Free Practice session at Circuit Paul Ricard. The young Briton seemed optimistic for his team’s chances in the upcoming French Grand Prix because of the new package.

Speaking of the way he feels about the upgrades made to his MCL36, Lando said, “We expected a small step. And it’s still too early to say, I’ve just driven it, and things feel different, some things a little bit better. And some things we’ve still got to optimise and figure out. But yeah, reasonable. I’ve still got to figure out a little bit how to drive the car, because it is a little bit different in that regard.

Lando Norris also addressed the matter of porpoising which had seemed to rattle his car during the FP2 session, “It felt like I had a decent amount. The last few races we’ve had quite a bit at times, Silverstone we had a lot as well, so I’m not surprised. Not a shock. Yeah, I’m hoping it’s kind of a good thing that, if we can improve the car, sometimes that promotes porpoising.”
