Aaron Rodgers finally opened up on his split from ex-fiancee, Shailene Woodley. Rodgers and Woodley started dating in 2020, got engaged, but went their separate ways soon after.
A few days prior to the start of the 2026 NFL season, Rodgers sat down with Pittsburgh Steelers teammate Cam Heyward for an episode of the Not Just Football podcast. Rodgers shared his thoughts on politics, his career, and a rare glimpse into his dating life with actor Shailene Woodley.
According to People magazine, Rodgers and Woodley met in 2020 during the peak COVID-19 outbreak and got engaged soon after. However, they broke up in 2022. Both have stayed quiet about the reason behind their separation until now.
I date[d] Shailene [Woodley], I propose, and she says yes. She maybe felt like she was forced to make a decision, she could have said no. But not a couple of days after that, she tells me before we get married like, ‘I got to go [ ] this guy.

Her story is, I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her, but in actuality she told me that and took off the ring by March. I proposed in December, took off the ring by March.

Woodley briefly touched on this sensitive subject in an interview. She doesn’t remember her time with Rodgers fondly.
I felt like I lost my soul, myself, my happiness, my joy.

How did Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley meet?
In 2020, Rodgers was entering the twilight of his Green Bay Packers career. Moreover, the world was reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rodgers announced his engagement to Woodley. The 34-year-old appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where she credited her dog for uniting him with Rodgers.
Initially, she never thought about dating someone who threw footballs for a living. But her dog acted as their personal cupid. Woodley joked that her dog would disown her if she didn’t date Rodgers, because the star quarterback quickly bonded with it.
We met during this wacky, wacky time and all the stadiums were closed that he was playing in, so I have yet to go to a football game. I didn’t really grow up with sports, especially American sports. It was never really on my radar.

The pair appeared together on various shows, visited Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and vacationed in Hawaii with actors Miles Teller and Sperry Teller.
However, the dreamy life ended in February 2020. The pair called off their engagement. An insider told People that the relationship was on the brink of collapse for a while because Rodgers and Woodley “are very different people.”
Woodley has stayed single ever since. Rodgers, meanwhile, has also dated actor Olivia Munn and NASCAR legend Danica Patrick. In 2025, the four-time NFL MVP announced that he had married Brittani in a private ceremony. After re-signing with the Steelers, Rodgers credited his wife for urging him to continue his career.
