“You’re Pretending as if Nothing Happened,” Albert Breer Warns Silence on Dianna Russini Matter Could Hurt Mike Vrabel’s Credibility

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated claimed that Mike Vrabel must tell the truth or put out a statement as soon as possible in the aftermath of Dianna Russini's resignation.

In Short
  • Mike Vrabel has not publicly addressed his relationship with Dianna Russini, raising concerns about his credibility.
  • Russini resigned from The Athletic amid an investigation into her relationship with Vrabel, which she initially denied.
  • NFL insider Albert Breer emphasizes the need for Vrabel to address the situation to maintain accountability with his players.

So far, the New England Patriots have avoided addressing Mike Vrabel‘s relationship with NFL insider/reporter Dianna Russini. But how long can they keep doing this? That’s a much bigger question.

Russini recently resigned from her post at The Athletic, a unit of The New York Times, although both she and Vrabel initially denied any inappropriate relationship. The Patriots have stayed quiet through all this.

Recently, Vrabel skipped the pre-draft press conference, leaving general manager Eliot Wolf to deal with the reporters’ questions. Wolf expertly handled the situation, but people across the league and beyond want a proper closure.

NFL insider for Sports Illustrated, Albert Breer, thinks it’s time for Vrabel to come clean with the truth. Breer said on NBC Boston’s Arbella Early Edition:

I think it becomes a credibility issue with the players. If you’re [Vrabel] preaching accountability 365 days a year to a group of 24,25,26 year olds… and if you’re not addressing it at all and you’re pretending like nothing happened… they’re gonna look at you sideways.

On April 7, inappropriate photos of Vrabel and Russini, hanging out at a luxurious establishment in Arizona, surfaced online. Although Russini quickly downplayed the clicks as innocent and harmless, receiving support from his colleagues at The Athletic, she resigned a week later after the publication launched an investigation against her.

Sports journalist Jemele Hill viewed Russini’s departure as unfair and one-sided treatment. She noted that Russini has been on the receiving end of much of the criticism and scrutiny while Vrabel remains silent. Hill also raised questions about the fairness of the investigation. Hill said on the Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz:

I don’t know how an investigation can exonerate someone when the perception has really taken over the reality. What is the proof that they would need to show the world that, no, they aren’t sleeping together? Do they give them a lie detector test?

NFL analyst rips Dianna Russini for handing in her resignation

A few days after the photos became a national topic for every football fan, Russini handed in her resignation letter to The Athletic. She thanked the Athletic for showing her support, but noted that the negative publicity is hurting the reputation of the publication. Russini wrote:

This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.

Veteran football personality Craig Carton perceived Russini’s resignation as a confession of her misdeeds. Carton said on his podcast:

You just announced that you were having an affair with [Mike] VrabelI believe that her resignation confirms that there was a relationship [between them]. And Dianna Russini did not resign because she had s*x with a coach. It’s because she’s covering the coach that she had s*x with, allegedly.

Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 after spending nearly a decade with ESPN. She married Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt in 2020, and the couple has two children together.
